February 5, 2014 - American Hockey League (AHL)
Cleveland Monsters News Release
Sami Aittokallio worked a shutout in net and four different players scored for the Lake Erie Monsters (20-21-0-4), who topped the Midwest Division-leading Grand Rapids Griffins (29-14-2-2) 4-0 Wednesday at Van Andel Arena in Grand Rapids, Michigan. Gabe Beaupre, Duncan Siemens, Garrett Meurs, and Colin Smith scored for the Monsters, who have shutout their opposition in two of the last three games. Andrew Agozzino posted a three-assist game for the Monsters, who are back in action Friday night at 7:30 PM when they host the San Antonio Rampage.
Beaupre opened the scoring of the Monsters after a clean faceoff win from Agozzino went straight back to the defenseman at the left point. Beaupre ripped a shot through traffic for his third goal of the season at 10:37 of the opening period.
Siemens rifled a shot from the high slot that beat Griffins goalie Petr Mrazek top-shelf at 7:23 of the second period. The goal was the first as a professional for Siemens, the 11th overall pick in the 2011 NHL Draft by the Colorado Avalanche. Agozzino picked up his second assist of the game on the tally, which put the Monsters up 2-0.
Meurs scored after a scramble in front of the Grand Rapids net to give the Monsters a 3-0 lead at 13:30 of the second period. The goal was the fourth of the season for Meurs, and was assisted by Colin Smith and Trevor Cheek.
The Monsters stretched the score to 4-0 with a power play goal at 10:09 of the third period. From his knees, Agozzino sent a picture-perfect centering pass to Smith from the left wing, and Smith redirected the pass top-shelf to beat Mrazek for his fifth goal of the season.
Aittokallio is 9-9-1 after stopping all 19 shots he saw in net for the Monsters. Mrazek is 11-3-2 for Grand Rapids after allowing four goals on 27 shots.
The Monsters are back in action on Friday at 7:30 when they host the San Antonio Rampage at Quicken Loans Arena.
