LAST WEEK'S HIGHLIGHTS
@ Norfolk (4/20): The Manchester Monarchs mounted a third period comeback with two goals but could not convert on the equalizer as they fell to the Norfolk Admirals, 3-2, in Game 1 of the best-of-five series in the 2012 Calder Cup Eastern Conference Quarterfinals at the Norfolk Scope on Friday night. Center Marc-Andre Cliche and right wing Stefan Legein scored for the Monarchs. Left wing Alexandre Picard, center Trevor Smith and defenseman Mark Barberio lit the lamp for the Admirals. Monarchs netminder Jeff Zatkoff (0-1) took his first loss of the post-season, stopping 10-of-13 shots. Monarchs goaltender Martin Jones (0-0) entered the game in the second period and made 19 saves on 19 shots. Admirals goaltender Jaroslav Janus (1-0) earned his first victory of the playoffs making 27 saves on 29 shots. Manchester went 0-for-7 on the power play. Norfolk was 2-for-6 with the man advantage.
@ Norfolk (4/21): Right wing Linden Vey tallied two goals and three points to help the Manchester Monarchs break the Norfolk Admirals 29-game winning streak with a 5-2 win in Game 2 to even the best-of-five 2012 Calder Cup Eastern Conference Quarterfinals series at 1-1 at the Norfolk Scope on Saturday night. The Monarchs also tallied goals from left wing Andy Andreoff, center Robbie Czarnik and right wing Brandon Kozun. Left wing Alexandre Picard scored both of the goals for the Admirals. Monarchs goaltender Martin Jones (1-0) earned his first victory of the post-season, stopping 37-of-39 shots. Admirals netminder Jaroslav Janus (1-1) took his first loss of the playoffs making 25 saves on 29 shots. Manchester went 0-for-7 on the power play. Norfolk was 0-for-5 with the man advantage.
vs. Norfolk (4/25): The Manchester Monarchs gave up an early goal but fought back to make it a one-goal game heading into the third period before falling to the Norfolk Admirals, 5-2, in Game 3 of the best-of-five 2012 Calder Cup Eastern Conference Quarterfinals at the Verizon Wireless Arena on Wednesday night.. Center Robbie Czarnik and right wing Stefan Legein scored goals for the Monarchs. Center Phillip-Michael Devos, left wing Pierre-Cedric Labrie, center Alexandre Picard and right wing Brandon Segal (two) registered goals for the Admirals. Monarchs goaltender Martin Jones (1-1) took his first loss of the post-season making 28 saves on 32 shots. Norfolk goaltender Dustin Tokarski (1-0) earned his first victory of the season stopping 25-of-27 shots. Manchester went 0-for-6 on the power play. Norfolk was 1-for-8 with the man advantage.
vs. Norfolk (4/27): The Manchester Monarchs season came to an end as the Norfolk Admirals took Game 4 of the best-of-five 2012 Calder Cup Eastern Conference Quarterfinals, 4-3 in overtime, at the Verizon Wireless Arena on Wednesday night. The Admirals won the series, 3-1. The Monarchs tallied goals from left wing Andy Andreoff, center Justin Azevedo and defenseman Patrick Mullen. Defenseman Mark Barberio, center Alex Killorn, center Trevor Smith and defenseman Evan Oberg scored goals for the Admirals. Monarchs netminder Jeff Zatkoff (0-2) took his second loss of the post-season stopping 35-of-39 shots. Admirals goaltender Dustin Tokarski (2-0) earned his second victory of the playoffs stopping 22-of-25 shots. Manchester went 1-for-5 on the power play. Norfolk was also 1-for-5 with the man advantage.

After tying the series at 1-1 in Norfolk, Virginia, the Manchester Monarchs (1-3) dropped the next two games at the Verizon Wireless Arena to the Norfolk Admirals (3-1) in the best-of-five 2012 Calder Cup Eastern Conference Quarterfinals. The Admirals won the series and advanced to play the Connecticut Whale (3-0), who swept the Bridgeport Sound Tigers (0-3), in the Eastern Conference Semifinals.
Game 1 - NORFOLK 3, Manchester 2 (Norfolk leads series 1-0)
Game 2 - MANCHESTER 5, Norfolk 2 (Series tied at 1-1)
Game 3 - NORFOLK 5, Manchester 2 (Norfolk leads series 2-1)
Game 4 - NORFOLK 4, Manchester 3 OT (Norfolk wins series 3-1)
The Monarchs Game 4 defeat was the Monarchs 23rd overtime game in post-season history. Manchester has an all-time franchise mark of 8-15 in overtime in the playoffs.
In the 2012 Calder Cup Playoffs, the Oklahoma City Barons (3-1), Abbotsford Heat (3-0), Toronto Marlies (3-0), San Antonio Rampage (3-2), St. John's IceCaps (3-1), Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins (3-2), and the Whale have all advanced to the 2012 Calder Cup Conference Semifinals in addition to the Admirals.
The Monarchs have an overall regular season record of 16-13-2-5 in 36 match-ups with the Admirals since 2001, including a 2-2-0-0 record during the 2010-11 season.
The Monarchs Game 2 victory on Saturday, April 21 ended a 29-game winning streak by the Admirals. Norfolk's last loss came on Sunday, February 5 against the Springfield Falcons. The longest AHL winning streak prior to Norfolk's streak was set at 17 games by the Philadelphia Phantoms during the 2004-05 season.
The Monarchs surrendered 22 shots in the second period of Game 2 against the Admirals, tying a Monarchs record for most shots allowed in one period. The Monarchs allowed 22 shots in the first period against the Portland Pirates on April 20, 2010. Manchester won that game against the Pirates 7-2 and swept Portland in that playoff series, 4-0.
Manchester went 1-for-25 on the power play in four games this post-season.
The Monarchs averaged 22.2 penalty minutes per game in the post-season which ranked second highest among Calder Cup Playoffs participants.
Manchester is 6-7 all-time in Game 4 during the Calder Cup Playoffs and has an all-time record of 0-10 when facing elimination in the playoffs.
Admirals left wing Alexandre Picard (4-4=8) registered eight points in four games against the Monarchs. Picard recorded six goals and 19 assists for 25 points in 42 games in the 2011-12 regular season.
AHL regular season scoring champion, Admirals center Cory Conacher (0-4=4), registered four assists and a plus/minus rating of minus-1 in four games. Conacher earned both the Dudley (Red) Garrett Memorial Award as the AHL's most outstanding rookie, as well as the Les Cunningham Award as the AHL's Most Valuable Player this season.
The Monarchs had 14 different players record at least one point in their series against the Admirals.
Right wing Linden Vey (2-4=6) produced back-to-back multiple point games registering two goals and an assist in Game 2 and two assists in Game 3. Vey had 10 multiple point games during the regular season including three three-point contests.
Vey's six points (2-4=6) led the Monarchs and tied for seventh in the AHL this post-season.
Vey's six points also tied for the league lead amongst rookie scorers with Admirals center Alex Killorn (1-5=6).
Vey's two goals and four assists also tied for second amongst rookie skaters this post-season.
Vey finished the series with a three-game point streak (2-4=6) after not recording a point in Game 1.
Defenseman Thomas Hickey (0-4=4) finished the playoffs tied with Vey for the team lead with four assists each.
Hickey was second on the team with four points this post-season.
Hickey led the Monarchs in the plus/minus category with a plus-4 in four post-season contests.
Hickey is tied for the league lead amongst defensemen with four assists and is tied for third in the league with four points among defensemen in the post-season.
Right wing Stefan Legein (2-0=2) finished tied with center Robbie Czarnik (2-0=2), left wing Andy Andreoff (2-0=2) and Vey for the team lead in goals with two tallies each.
Legein scored a shorthanded goal in the third period of Game 1. Legein had five shorthanded goals during the regular season which was tied for most in the league. Legein ranked second on the team in the plus/minus category with a plus-3 through four post-season contests.
The Monarchs led the league during the regular season with 15 shorthanded strikes.
Legein's shorthanded goal in Game 1 was the fifth shorthanded tally in Monarchs post-season history.
Czarnik scored the game-winning goal in the Monarchs 5-2 victory in Game 2 on Saturday, April 21.
Czarnik's game-winning goal was also his first career playoff point.
Andreoff's empty net goal in Game 2 was his first point in the Calder Cup Playoffs.
Defenseman Patrick Mullen (1-2=3) finished third on the Monarchs with three points.
Mullen's two assists were third most on the team this post-season.
Center Justin Azevedo (1-1=2) assisted on Legein's shorthanded goal in Game 1. The helper was his 14th career assist in the Calder Cup Playoffs and he is now tied with right wing Bud Holloway for most assists in Monarchs playoff history.
Azevedo also has 21 career post-season points (7-14=21) ranking him second on the Monarchs all-time list behind Holloway who has 25 points (11-14=25).
Forward Brian O'Neill (0-1=1) recorded an assist on Mullen's second period goal in Game 4. O'Neill's assist was his first career AHL playoff point.
Defenseman Jake Muzzin (0-1=1) completed the post-season with an even plus/minus rating in three games. Muzzin missed Game 3 due to injury but returned for Game 4. Muzzin is the Monarchs all-time plus/minus leader among active players in the post-season with a plus-8 which also ranks second all-time among Monarchs players. Muzzin trails Holloway's plus-13 for the best mark in Monarchs playoff history.
Goaltender Martin Jones (1-1) stopped 20-of-22 shots during the second period of Game 2. Jones' 20 saves were two shy of the Monarchs all-time record of saves in a period. Netminder Jonathan Bernier holds the all-time record with 22 saves in the first period against the Pirates on April 20, 2010.
Jones had a shutout streak of 60:16 snapped in the second period of Game 2. Jones' streak began during the second period of Game 1 in which he made saves on all 19 shots he faced in relief of Monarchs goaltender Jeff Zatkoff (0-2).
In three appearances, Jones owns a 2.33 goals-against-average and a 0.933 save percentage which ranks fourth among playoff goaltenders.
Jones has a 3-2 record all-time in the playoffs with a 2.45 goals-against-average and a 0.926 save percentage.
Zatkoff made 35 saves on 39 shots in Game 4 against the Admirals including nine overtime saves. Zatkoff finished with a 4.34 goals- against-average and a 0.865 save percentage in two starts this post-season.
Zatkoff has a 1-5 record all-time in the post-season with a 3.96 goals-against-average and a 0.884 save percentage.
