LAST WEEK'S HIGHLIGHTS
At Portland (2/2): Right wing Mark Mancari picked up five assists as the Manchester Monarchs fell to the Portland Pirates, 6-1, at the Cumberland County Civic Center on Tuesday afternoon. Center Justin Azevedo picked up the lone goal for the Monarchs. Left wing Jeff Cowan (2), center Tyler Ennis (2), left wing Brad Larsen and defenseman T.J. Brennan. Monarchs goaltender Jeff Zatkoff (8-6-0) took his sixth loss of the season stopping 38-of-44 shots. Pirates netminder Jhonas Enroth (19-14-1) earned his 19th win of the season recording 37 saves on 38 shots. Manchester was 0-for-3 on the power play. Portland was also 0-for-3 with the man advantage.
At Adirondack (2/5): The Manchester Monarchs dropped to second place in the Atlantic Division for the first time since October 18 as they fell 3-1 to the Adirondack Phantoms at the Glens Falls Civic Center on Friday night. Left wing Dwight King scored the lone goal for the Monarchs. Left wing Mila Pyorala, center Jonathan Kalinski and center Jon Matsumoto scored for the Phantoms. Monarchs goaltender Jonathan Bernier (21-12-5) took his 12th loss of the season with 29 saves on 31 shots. Phantoms netminder Johan Backlund (15-10-2) picked up his 15th win of the season with 24 saves. Manchester was 0-for-2 on the power play. Adirondack was 0-for-3 with the man advantage.
At Bridgeport (2/6): The Manchester Monarchs dropped their third consecutive game, a 6-4 defeat to the Bridgeport Sound Tigers at the Arena at Harbor Yard on Saturday night. The Monarchs picked up tallies from left wing Bud Holloway, defenseman David Kolomatis, right wing John Zeiler and center Justin Azevedo. The Sound Tigers lit the lamp with goals from left wing Trevor Smith, left wing Robin Figren, left wing Jesse Joensuu, defenseman Mark Flood, left wing Greg Mauldin and forward Matt Martin. Monarchs goaltender Jonathan Bernier (21-13-5) took his 13th loss of the season with 29 saves on 35 shots. Sound Tigers netminder Martin Biron (1-1-0) earned his first win of the season with 27 saves. Manchester was 1-for-6 on the power play. Bridgeport was 1-for-4 with the man advantage.
NEWS & NOTES
The Manchester Monarchs (29-17-2-5, 65 points) dropped out of first place for the first time this season since October 18 following a 3-1 loss to the Adirondack Phantoms on Friday night. In the midst of a three-game losing streak, the longest of the season, Manchester fell one point behind the Worcester Sharks (31-16-2-2, 66 points) in the Atlantic Division.
The Atlantic Division standings are tight with the top four teams only separated by five points.
The Monarchs are 17-6-0-2 at the Verizon Wireless Arena this season.
Manchester is currently on a three-game losing streak and is 4-4-1-1 in their last 10 games.
The Monarchs penalty kill is ranked third in the AHL. They have given up 28 goals in 219 attempts when their opponent has had the man advantage.
Their power play is ranked seventh in the league with 40 goals on 203 opportunities with the man advantage.
Manchester has been outshot by their opponent in 39-of-53 games thus far this season.
The Monarchs are 15-1-0-0 when scoring the first goal on home ice.
Center Corey Elkins (16-19=35) leads Manchester with 35 points and has been held off the scoreboard in the Monarchs last three games.
Left wing Bud Holloway (15-18=33) is ranked second on the Monarchs roster in both points and goals.
Holloway is tied for fifth in the AHL with five game-winning-goals this season.
Center Gabe Gauthier (8-20=28) leads the Monarchs with 20 assists and ranks third in points with 28.
Gauthier is on a five-game scoreless streak.
Defenseman Viatcheslav Voynov (8-16$) leads Monarchs bluliners and ranks fourth overall on the team with 24 points.
Right wing Scott Parse (3-10=13), who is currently on recall with the Los Angeles Kings, leads the team in the plus/minus category with a plus-11. Defenseman Drew Bagnall (2-6=8) and right wing Kevin Westgarth (8-11=19) are close behind with a plus-10.
Center Justin Azevedo (4-7=11) has recorded five points (2-3=5) in five games since returning from a lower body injury that he suffered on November 18.
Goaltender Jonathan Bernier has a record of 21-13-5 in 40 games of the season. His 21 wins are tied for third in the AHL.
Bernier's six shutouts lead the AHL.
Bernier is ranked third in the league with a 2.01 goals-against-average and is ranked second with a.938 save percentage.
Netminder Jeff Zatkoff has played in 15 games for the Monarchs this season, recording an 8-6-0 record, a 2.62 goals-against-average, a.926 save percentage and two shutouts.
