BRAMPTON, ON - The Manchester Monarchs won their first game of the 2017-18 season with a 4-2 victory over the Brampton Beast on Sunday afternoon at the Powerade Centre.

The Monarchs (1-1-0-0) picked up where they left off in last year's North Division Finals, and took the first meeting of the season with the Beast (0-2-0-0).

The Monarchs opened the scoring when Sam Kurker scored his 1st goal of the season at 10:13 of the first period. Kurker found the puck in the legs of a Beast defender after his initial shot was blocked, and sent a wrister from below the right dot past Brampton goaltender, Marcus Hogberg, to put the Monarchs up, 1-0.

Manchester doubled its lead when David Kolomatis scored his 1st goal of the season while on the power play. While entering the zone, Matt Leitner took the puck to the right hash where he wrapped a forehand pass against the grain to Kolomatis who beat an out of position Hogberg for the 2-0 Monarchs lead at 8:23 of the second period.

Brampton cut the lead in half when Jordan Boucher scored his 2nd goal of the season at 10:07. After heavy pressure in the Monarchs zone while on the power play, Chris Leveille found Boucher on the left hash where he one-timed a shot off the right post and past Monarchs goaltender, Charles Williams, to make the score, 2-1.

The Monarchs made it 3-1 when Joel Lowry netted his 1st goal of the season at 15:45 of the middle frame. Lowry crashed the net on a 3-on-1 break and had a Leitner pass re-direct off his right skate and past Hogberg to give the Monarchs their two-goal lead back.

The Beast would make things interesting when Brandon Marino scored his 2nd goal of the season at 15:30 of the final frame. Marino was camped in front of Williams and tipped a Matt Petgrave shot from the left point past Williams, to bring Brampton closer, 3-2.

Manchester put the game away when Kevin Morris scored and empty-net goal with :41 seconds remaining in the contest. Morris found the puck on his stick at the red line and flipped the puck into the empty cage to seal the deal for the Monarchs, 4-2.

The Monarchs return to the ice Tuesday, Oct. 17 (11 a.m.), when they play the Beast on Education Day in Brampton.

The Monarchs play their 2017-18 home opener Oct. 21 (7 p.m.), when they drop the puck against the Worcester Railers at SNHU Arena.
