Manchester Monarchs News Release
Manchester, N.H. - The Manchester Monarchs, ECHL affiliate of the Los Angeles Kings, announced Tuesday the signings of center Derek Arnold and defenseman Tony Turgeon for the 2015-16 season, and try-out agreements with goalie Steve Mastalerz and Pelham, N.H. native, Andrew Cerretani.
Arnold is a 5-foot-8, 172-pound center, who most recently played for Lillehammer IK in Norway's GET-ligaen, the top league in the country. In 45 games for Lillehammer, Arnold posted 45 points on 21 goals and 24 assists, adding four points in four playoff games.
The Foxboro, Mass. native was a member of the Boston Junior Bruins and Waterloo Black Hawks for two seasons each, before competing in Hockey East for UMass Lowell. At UMass Lowell, Arnold played in 154 games over his four-year career, totaling 98 points on 43 goals and 55 assists. Arnold scored the game-winning goal to lift the River Hawks over Boston University in the Hockey East Championship game during his junior season, their first of back-to-back league titles.
Turgeon, a 6-foot-4, 228 pound left shot defenseman split time between the Allen Americans and Cincinnati Cyclones of the ECHL, and the San Antonio Rampage of the AHL last season, totaling 26 games between the three teams.
The Grand Forks, N.D. native played three seasons at the University of Nebraska-Omaha, before foregoing his senior season after signing a professional contract with the Florida Panthers. The defenseman is more well-known for his defensive and physical play, racking up 169 penalty minutes during his 62-game college career. Turgeon and Arnold were teammates in Waterloo during the 2009-10 season, when Turgeon racked up 113 penalty minutes in 28 games.
Steve Mastalerz is a familiar name with Monarchs fans, as the goalie from UMass Amherst dressed as the backup netminder in four of the five Calder Cup Finals games for the Monarchs last season. Mastalerz, the winning goalie in the longest game in NCAA history (5 overtimes), and a North Andover, Mass. native, played four seasons for the Minutemen, playing in 77 games in Hockey East, with his best season coming during his junior campaign, when he posted a 2.77 GAA and a .907 save percentage.
Pelham, N.H. native, Andrew Cerretani, also signed a try-out agreement with the Monarchs. Cerretani just finished a four-year career at the University of Maine, playing in 76 games for the Black Bears. The 5-foot-10, 180-pound right shooting forward will look to make his first professional team out of college. Cerretani was a three-time Hockey East Academic All-American during his time in Orono.
The Monarchs will open the season at home on Oct. 16 at 7 p.m. as they host the Brampton Beast at the Verizon Wireless Arena. Individual-game tickets for Opening Night go on sale to the public on Oct. 1 at 9 a.m.
