WHEELING, WV- The Wheeling Nailers, proud ECHL affiliate of the Pittsburgh Penguins, are excited to announce their eighth player signing of the 2015 offseason. Wheeling has signed defenseman Brett Stern to an ECHL contract.

Stern, 23, got an early start on his professional career at the tail end of the 2014-15 season, when he appeared in two games with the Orlando Solar Bears. Prior to that, Brett attended Minnesota State University, Mankato for four years, where he majored in Sport Management, while playing for the Mavericks. During his time in Mankato, Stern appeared in 137 games, notching six goals, 18 assists, 24 points, and 139 penalty minutes. In his senior season, Brett was named team captain, after serving as an alternate captain during his junior campaign.

"Brett is a big, strong defenseman, who can move the puck, and has good hands," said Nailers Head Coach Clark Donatelli. "He has good leadership qualities, and wore the captain's "C" at Minnesota State Mankato."

The Lino Lakes, Minnesota native also played one season of junior hockey with the USHL's Green Bay Gamblers, recording one goal, five assists, six points, and 27 penalty minutes in 31 games, while posting a +14 rating. Stern has been teammates with Pittsburgh Penguins draft pick Teddy Blueger for the past two seasons.

"I have heard great things about Wheeling and West Virginia, and that the coaching staff is unbelievable to play for," Stern said. "I see myself as a stay-at-home defenseman, who gets in the way of a lot of pucks, and throws the body around. Last year in Orlando was an awesome experience, as it taught me the ropes, giving me a better grasp of pro hockey both on and off the rink."

Brett Stern and the Nailers will hit the ice on October 16th and 17th for a two-game series in Norfolk to start the 2015-16 regular season. The home opener will take place on October 24th at 7:35 against Brampton.

Wheeling Nailers 2015-16 season tickets and mini plans are on sale now. For more information, call 304-234-GOAL or visit wheelingnailers.com.
