GLENS FALLS, N.Y. - The Manchester Monarchs couldn't make a three-goal lead in the second period hold up, and fell to the Adirondack Thunder, 6-5, in a shootout Friday night at the Cool Insuring Arena.

The Monarchs (2-1-0-1) and Thunder (2-0-0-0) both peppered the opposing goaltenders, and finished the night with 43 shots on goal apiece.

The Monarchs opened the scoring with a power-play goal from Zac Lynch at 4:59 of the first period. Colton Saucerman blasted a slap shot at Thunder goaltender, Nick Riopel, from the left point, and Lynch found the rebound in the slot where he put away the five-hole goal for his 1st tally of the season.

James Henry tied the game for the Thunder at 17:02 of the first period when he scored his 1st goal of the season. In the left corner, Eric Neiley fed the puck to Henry inside the face-off circle where he sent a one-timer below the blocker of Monarchs goaltender, Evan Cowley, to make the score, 1-1.

The Thunder took the lead just over a minute later when J.C. Campagna scored his 1st goal of the season at 18:07 of the first period, making it 2-1. After receiving a pass from Ryan Segalla in the neutral zone, Campagna carried the puck down to the left-wing circle where he fired a wrister over Cowley's blocker to put Adirondack on top.

Craig Wyszomirski tied the game at 2-2 for the Monarchs at 4:07 of the second period. Tony Cameranesi skated the puck to the blue line and dished the puck to Wyszomirski, who fired a slap shot from just inside the blue line past Riopel for his 1st goal of the season.

The Monarchs took the lead at 7:36 of the second period when Matt Marcinew scored his first goal of the season in his Monarchs debut. Marcinew found the puck off a shot by Saucerman in the slot, and one-timed the rebound over Riopel's blocker for the 3-2 lead.

The Monarchs took a two-goal lead when Cory Ward scored his 2nd goal of the season at 13:55 of the second period, to make the score, 4-2. Matt Schmalz attempted a wrap-around on Riopel, but the puck found Ward in the slot who one-timed it past a diving Riopel to double the Manchester advantage.

The Monarchs extended their lead when Rob Hamilton scored his1st goal of the season at 15:45 of the second period. Schmalz fed Hamilton from the high slot to the blue line, where Hamilton connected on a one-timed slap shot past Riopel's blocker, to give the Monarchs a 5-2 lead.

The Thunder narrowed the goal margin when Henry netted his 2nd goal of the night at 17:28 of the second period, to make it a 5-3 game. Ty Loney threw the puck to the front of the net from the right-wing circle, and found a crashing Henry on Cowley's doorstep who slid the puck past the Monarchs netminder for his 2nd goal of the season.

The Thunder continued to chip away at the Monarchs lead when Dylan Olsen scored at 16:30 of the third period to make it a 5-4 contest. Along the boards, Campagna found Olsen on the blue line, where Olsen sent a slap shot from the right point over Cowley's blocker for his 1st tally of the season.

The Thunder tied the game at 18:02 of the third period when Desmond Bergin scored his 1st goal of the season. From the low right-wing circle, Pierre-Luc Mercier threw the puck to the net and Bergin tipped-home the puck that trickled through Cowley's legs.

The game could not be decided in regulation or overtime and headed to a shootout, where Campagna scored the lone goal after three rounds, to give the Thunder the 6-5 win.

The Monarchs return to the ice Saturday, Oct. 21 (6 p.m.), when they take on the Worcester Railers on Opening Night at SNHU Arena.
