
Mohawk Valley Take Two from Newark in Monday Doubleheader

NEWARK, N.Y. - The Mohawk Valley DiamondDawgs outscored the Newark Pilots 22-3 as they swept both games of Monday's nontraditional doubleheader at Colburn Park.
Mohawk Valley (13-12) took Game 1 - the completion of the suspended game from June 5 - by a final of 10-1 before winning Game 2, 12-2.
Game 1
Back on June 5, the DiamondDawgs dropped a six-spot in the opening frame, taking a commanding lead from the get-go. Troy Scocca (Fairfield) highlighted the inning with a three-run home run. After just three innings, the game was suspended due to lighting with Mohawk Valley up 6-0.
On Monday, Marcus Failing (Herkimer C.C.) picked up where he left off on the mound and finished to a complete-game. He fanned eight while allowing just one run on five hits for the win.
Kevin Biondic (Maryland), normally a corner infielder, and Brian Dudek (Buffalo), a middle infielder, combined for six innings of relief for the Pilots (10-15). Both players gave up a pair of unearned runs.
The Pilots scored their only run of the game on an RBI fielder's choice from Ryan Lynch (Marist) in the seventh, plating Anthony Spina (Amherst), who led off the inning with an infield base hit.
Game 2
With the game tied at 1-1, the DiamondDawgs scored six runs off of seven hits, including two triples. Ryan Stekl (Canisius) broke the tie with an RBI three-bagger. Four batters later, Malcolm Kelsey (St. John Fisher) plated a pair with another triple, making it 6-1.
The DiamondDawgs added three more in the sixth when Thomas Walraven (New Haven) drove in two with a triple and later scored to make it 10-1.
Newark's only runs came in the first and ninth. The Pilots evened the game at 1-all on a Cody Wiktorski (St. John Fisher) double in the first. Will Gorman (RIT) tripled and scored on an RBI single from Gabe Levanti (Northeastern) two batters later in the ninth.
David Palmer (New Haven) earned the win for Mohawk Valley with 6.2 innings of one-run ball. Clayton Spiker (Saginaw Valley State) was handed the loss after allowing 10 runs on 10 hits in 5.1 innings. Spiker did strike out a game-high five batters.
The Newark Pilots hit the road for a 5 p.m. contest at Victor against the RailRiders on Tuesday, July 7 at Victor High School. Mohawk Valley returns to Little Falls, N.Y., to host Saugerties at 6:35 p.m. on Tuesday.
