Modesto Nuts News Release

MODESTO, CA - Following a three-day lay off for the All-Star Game, the Nuts opened up the second-half of the season with a 3-1 victory over the Rawhide on Thursday night at John Thurman Field.

Modesto was able to frustrate the Visalia offense, limiting them to only two hits on the night. Ben Alsup (4-8) was able to snap a six-game losing streak on the mound, giving the Nuts six strong innings in the win.

The Nuts jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the second against Rawhide starter Andrew Barbosa, and never looked back en route to victory. After Tyler Massey was hit by a pitch, Harold Riggins doubled to put two in scoring position, with Niko Gallego getting Modesto on the board with a groundout to third. Trevor Story followed with an infield RBI single to make it 2-0.

Visalia cut the deficit in half on their first hit against Alsup in the third, a solo home run by Gerson Montilla. But Modesto quickly answered in the bottom of the inning as Ryan Casteel belted a solo shot for his team-leading 14th of the season.

Barbosa (4-4) would last six innings, but was tagged for six earned runs on nine hits. Rawhide left-fielder David Nick struggled to track balls in the fourth inning, allowing a fly ball from Gallego to drop in for a triple and an RBI double for Brian Humphries later in the inning. Jared Simon doubled and scored in the fifth to cap Modesto's attack for the night.

Both bullpens held the opposition without a hit the rest of the way. Modesto retired the final 13 batters of the game, as Alsup sent down his final four, Kraig Sitton was perfect in two innings, and Nelson Gonzalez worked a 1-2-3 ninth.

The two team's return tomorrow night for the second game of a four-game series. RHP Eddie Butler (2-1, 3.41) will start for the Nuts, opposite RHP Conrad Flynn (4-2, 5.19) for the Rawhide. First pitch is set for 7:05 p.m.
