Southern Maryland Blue Crabs News Release
Lancaster, PA-Southern Maryland starter Ben Moore announced his presence with authority as he held Lancaster to one run on four hits in the Blue Crabs' 9-1 win over the Barnstormers on Sunday night at Clipper Magazine Stadium. The start was Moore's debut as a Blue Crab.
The Blue Crabs jumped on Barnstormers starter Yunior Novoa by plating three runs in the first inning. Southern Maryland loaded the bases before third baseman Travis Garcia doubled in two runs to give the visitors a 2-0 lead. Leftfielder Ben Harrison followed Garcia's work with an RBI single of his own for the 3-0 advantage in the first.
Lancaster got a run back in the second as right fielder Matt Watson (15) belted a solo homer to put the Barnstormers on the board.
Southern Maryland, however, stormed back in the fourth. With two out and no one on, centerfielder Adam Godwin drew a walk, second baseman Brandon Pinckney singled, then designated hitter Brian Barton (11) blasted a three-run homer to center to give the Blue Crabs a commanding 7-1 lead. They added another run in the sixth on a RBI double from Pinckney, which scored Godwin from first and made the count 8-1.
To add insult to injury, the Blue Crabs added one more run in the ninth on another RBI double from Garcia to make the final 9-1.
The Blue Crabs notched 14 hits for the game, including three each by Pinckney and Barton, with Pinckney registering a double and a run scored in addition to his RBI. Barton, along with his homer, also had three RBI, three runs scored, and a stolen base for his efforts. Godwin and Garcia each had two hits for Southern Maryland with Godwin picking up two singles and scoring three runs. Garcia had two doubles and three RBI.
No one had more than one hit in the game for Lancaster as the Barnstormers could only muster five base-knocks for the game.
Moore (1-0) got the win for Southern Maryland by going seven innings and allowing one run on four hits. He walked two and struck out eight.
Novoa (5-5) took the loss for the Barnstormers after allowing seven earned runs on seven hits in four innings pitched.
The Blue Crabs will finish their three-game series with the Barnstormers on Monday in a special 3:00 start at Clipper Magazine Stadium. Southern Maryland will send righty Nick Green (9-6, 3.53 ERA) against fellow-righty J.D. Durbin (8-2, 4.58 ERA) for Lancaster. The game can be heard on www.somdbluecrabs.com.
