July 17, 2014 - North American Soccer League (NASL)
San Antonio Scorpions News Release
SAN ANTONIO, Texas (Thursday, July 17, 2014) - The San Antonio Scorpions have brought in former Los Angeles Galaxy goalkeeper Josh Saunders on loan from Major League Soccer expansion franchise New York City FC, announced team President / General Manager Howard Cornfield and Head Coach Alen Marcina today. The loan is for the remainder of the 2014 NASL season.
Saunders has appeared in almost 60 games in MLS, all but three of which were with the Galaxy. He compiled a career record of 32-13-12 with 20 shutouts and an impressive goals-against average(GAA) of 1.20 in MLS. Saunders has won 11 championships and Supporters' Shields during his career and brings additional leadership and experience to the Scorpions' lineup.
"We're thrilled about forming a relationship with New York City FC with the addition of Josh for the NASL Fall Season," said Head Coach Alen Marcina. "With three MLS Cups, five Western Conference Championships, two Supporters' Shields and a USL title, Josh solidifies our defense and brings invaluable experience. It also speaks to the caliber of goalkeeper that we're adding to our roster."
The 6'4", 210 lb Saunders was the Galaxy's primary 'keeper during their back-to-back runs to the MLS Cup Championship in the 2011-12 MLS playoffs . A native of Grants Pass, OR, Saunders became the first-choice starter for Los Angeles midway through the 2011 season. Saunders has also appeared internationally for the United States at the U-23 level and for Puerto Rico's senior team.
"We anticipate that Saunders will be a very important player for us as we focus on winning the fall season," said Cornfield. "Daryl Sattler was unable to stay with us due to his prior commitments, but we know fans will be very pleased with the addition of someone with Josh's pedigree."
In addition to his time with the Galaxy, Saunders has played professionally for the San Jose Earthquakes (MLS), Portland Timbers (USL 1st Division), Puerto Rico Islanders (USL 1st Division), Miami FC (USL 1st Division) and Real Salt Lake (MLS).
The Scorpions play their first home game of the fall campaign on July 19th at 7:30pm against the Fort Lauderdale Strikers. For information on Scorpions season tickets call 210-495-8686 or visit sascorpions.com.
