Rockford, Ill.- The United Hockey League announced Tuesday that Rockford IceHogs center Preston Mizzi has been named the Sher-Wood Player of Month for the month of October. Mizzi leads the UHL with nine goals and added two assists during the first month of the 2005-06 season.
Mizzi is the third player in Hogs history to win Player of the Month honors. The fifth year skater netted six goals during the IceHogs three-game Week 2, including his first career hat trick on Friday against the Missouri River Otters. Mizzi then tallied twice on Saturday against the Quad City Mallards. In Rockford's first six games, Mizzi has three multi-goal games.
The Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario native is playing in his first season with the IceHogs. Mizzi's top season in the pro ranks came during the 2002-03 campaign when he notched 22g-35a-57pts in 67 games while skating with the Pee Dee Pride (ECHL). Mizzi has also played 41 games in the American Hockey League during his first four seasons.
The IceHogs lead the UHL with 33 goals in the club's first six games, an average of 5.5 goals per contest. Mizzi has paced the offense since game one, and began his run with two goals on opening night against the Elmira Jackals. Overall, Mizzi has a goal in five of the six Rockford games.
The other two IceHogs to be recognized for Player of the Month honors include center Jason Firth in November 1999 and goaltender Ronnie Vogel in October 2003.
