Missoula Adds RHP Valdez to Bullpen

MISSOULA, MT - The Arizona Diamondbacks sent RHP Jhonny Valdez from the Arizona League to Missoula, the organization announced Monday. Right-hander Mailon Arroyo has been issued to Hillsboro (A-short), with fellow righty Ryan Fritze being shipped back to Kane County (A-full).

Arroyo led the Pioneer League in saves (7), with Fritze tied for second (5) in the category.

Valdez made eight appearances for the AZL D-backs in 2019, striking out 21 batters in 15.1 innings of work. The right-hander held batters to a .173 average, boasting a 0.78 WHIP.

Valdez, age 20 from San Cristobal, D.R., had his best performance in the AZL on July 2, where he struck out five batters in 2.0 innings in shut-out fashion.

In his last performance, Valdez earned his only save of the season, striking out four batters in 1.2 innings, allowing no runs on two hits. Fritze's last performance for the Osprey resulted in his fifth save of the season with a strikeout in one inning vs Billings on July 25. The right-hander struck out 25 batters in 16.1 innings with the O's, holding opponents to a .230 average.

Arroyo helped issue a 1-4-3 double play in his last Osprey showing on July 27 to complete a two- inning save, his seventh of the season. The right-hander leaves Missoula with 30 strikeouts in 18 innings, holding batters to a .159 average.

The Osprey will be home next on Thursday, August 1 for Stadium Happy Hour at Ogren Park at Allegiance Field. Gates open at 6:00, with first pitch against the Great Falls Voyagers at 7:05 pm.
