Mississippi Wins in Shootout, Defeats Dayton 3-2
March 10, 2011 - Central Hockey League (CHL)
Dayton Gems News Release
The Dayton Gems had the lead heading into the final period of their game against Mississippi on Thursday night. But that lead got away from the Gems and they were never able to regain it.
The RiverKings defeated the Gems 3-2 in a game that was decided in a shootout.
Each team sent eight players out on the ice to take a shot at the goal during the shootout. Gems goaltender Derek MacIntyre stopped six of the RiverKings' eight shots, but it wasn't enough as the Gems were only able to record one goal on the same number of shots.
Mississippi's Derek Landmesser scored the deciding goal in the shootout to give the RiverKings the victory.
In the game, it took just 2:23 for the RiverKings to make their first mark on the scoreboard. Matt Summers scored the goal while Darrell Stoddard and Nathan Lutz were credited with the assist.
Dayton's Nathan Oke then tied the game for the Gems just past the midway point of the period with a powerplay goal. Brett Lutes and Brandon Naurato were each credited with an assist.
After the first intermission, Chris Lipsett gave Dayton its first lead of the game with a powerplay goal 7:45 into the period. When Lippsett put the Gems ahead 2-1, it was the first time the Gems had led in a game since Sunday.
In the third period, Chris Richards was able to tie the game at 2-2 with a powerplay goal for the RiverKings.
The score would stay that way until Landmesser's goal in the shootout.
The Gems will head back to Bossier-Shreveport to take on the Mudbugs at 8:05 p.m. on Friday night.
The Kettering Medical Center is proud to be the official title sponsor of the Gems for the 2010-11 season.
