Mississippi Surge Vanquishes Pensacola in Shootout, 5-4

Kyle Kudroch scored the clinching goal in a shootout, and Mississippi Surge picked up the extra point in a 5-4 (2-0 SO) win over the Pensacola Ice Flyers.

The shootout featured eight attempts between both teams. Mississippi Surge also got a shootout goal from Kudroch.

Mississippi Surge overcame a three-goal deficit to capture the victory. Mississippi Surge trailed 3-0 after a power play goal by Pensacola's Justin Alonzo at 7:06 in the second period. Mississippi Surge tied things up at 4-4 on a power play goal by Joe Tolles at 12:44 in the third period.

Tolles was all over the ice for Mississippi Surge, as he tallied two goals and one assist in the win. Tolles scored the first of his two goals on the power play at 16:57 into the second period to make the score 3-2 Pensacola. Mississippi Surge had gained a power play chance when Shaun Arvai was whistled for cross checking. Kudroch picked up the assist. Tolles' next tally on the power play made the score with 7:16 left in the third period. Mississippi Surge had gotten the advantage when the Ice Flyers' Steve Brown was sent off for hooking. Dion Campbell provided the assist.

Mississippi Surge racked up the penalties in the contest, and ended with five minors and two majors for 20 minutes in penalty time. Mississippi Surge surpassed its season average of 16.0 penalty minutes per game. With 26 shots on target during the contest, Mississippi Surge exceeded the 17.5 shots it averages per game this year. Mississippi Surge bested its season scoring average. Mississippi Surge has scored at the pace of 2.6 goals per game during the current campaign. Team's forwards weren't the only contributers offensively, and the team's defensemen showcased their scoring touch with two goals.

Mississippi Surge also had goals scored by Ian Boots and Jordan Peddle, who each put in one. Other players who recorded assists for Mississippi Surge were Evan Zych, who had two and Justin MacDonald and Jarkko Leppanen, who contributed one a piece.

Pensacola forced its penalty killing units to work especially hard during the game, picking up eight minors and two majors for 26 minutes in penalty time. The Ice Flyers had been averaging 18.0 minutes in penalties per game. Pensacola put 43 shots on net during the contest, more than the 24.8 it averages per game.

The Ice Flyers were led by Corey Banfield, who grabbed one goal and two assists. Banfield scored on the power play 13 seconds into the third period to make the score 4-2 Pensacola. Alonzo picked up the assist. Pensacola also got points from Alonzo, who also registered one goal and two assists and Joe Caveney, who also racked up one goal and one assist. Keegan Flaherty also scored for Pensacola. More assists for Pensacola came via Adam Pawlick, who had one.

Mathieu Dugas recorded 39 saves for Mississippi Surge. Mississippi Surge registered three goals on eight power play opportunities. Peter Di Salvo rejected 21 shots on goal for Pensacola. The Ice Flyers registered two goals on five power play opportunities.
