Pensacola Ice Flyers News Release
PENSACOLA, FL. (February 20, 2014) - The Pensacola Ice Flyers aimed to see their cumulative season attendance top 100,000 tonight and pick up another win over the Mississippi Surge. Unfortunately, the Ice Flyers found them themselves on the wrong end of a 5-4 shootout loss.
The Ice Flyers outplayed the Surge for the majority of the first period and finally broke through on the scoreboard with 4:58 remaining in the frame. Caveney took the puck from Justin Alonzo, skated up the left wing, and ripped a shot that beat the Surge's Mathieu Dugas. Corey Banfield had the other assist on Caveney's goal. Just over a minute later, Keegan Flaherty made it 2-0 with Adam Pawlick getting the only assist on the goal.
The Ice Flyers pushed their lead to 3-0 just 6:06 into the second. Justin Alonzo picked up a power play goal with assisted by Banfield and Shaun Arvai. Mississippi mounted a comeback with two goals in just over six minutes by Jordan Peddle and Joe Tolles to make it 3-2 after 40 minutes.
Pensacola pushed the lead to 4-2 just 13 seconds into the third when Banfield picked up a goal of his own. Alonzo and Caveney assisted on Banfield's ninth goal of the season. Mississippi clawed back and tied the game with a goal by Ian Boots and Tolles' second goal of the night. The game headed to overtime tied at four and was still tied even after the teams traded power play chances. Kyle Kudroch and Boots scored in the shootout for Mississippi to solidify the win for the Surge.
Peter Di Salvo stopped 21 of the 25 shots Mississippi threw his way. Alonzo was named the second star and Banfield was named the first star.
The Ice Flyers next game is tomorrow night in Lafayette, Louisiana as they take on the Louisiana IceGators with puck drop slated for 7:05 p.m. Central.
