San Antonio Missions News Release
A season-high, nine-run, eighth-inning rally propelled San Antonio to a series-sweeping, 10-5 victory over Northwest Arkansas Sunday afternoon at Wolff Stadium.
Coming off consecutive heart-breaking losses, the Naturals got off to a strong start in Sunday's finale, beginning in the second against San Diego rehabber Brandon Morrow. Northwest Arkansas began the frame with five straight hits, which resulted in two runs against Morrow, who was making his second rehab start with San Antonio. A sacrifice bunt by Terrance Gore capped the three-run rally.
Morrow exited with two outs in the third due to shoulder soreness, throwing a total of 49 pitches on the afternoon.
The Missions cut their deficit to 3-1 against starter Miguel Almonte in the fourth on Duanel Jones' RBI single to left.
Northwest Arkansas pushed its lead to 4-1 in the fifth on a Raul Mondesi sacrifice fly against reliever Stephen Kohlscheen. Three innings later, the Naturals made the score, 5-1 on an RBI double by Alex Liddi.
San Antonio's bats finally woke up in its half of the eighth against relievers Malcom Culver, Daniel Stumpf and Aroni Nina. The Missions erased their four-run deficit and then some in the inning, plating nine runs on nine hits (both season highs for an inning this season). Incredibly, all nine runs came with two outs. Of the nine hits in the frame, four were doubles. Yeison Asencio and Alberth Martinez each had two hits in the eighth. The biggest hit of them all was Rey Bruguera's go-ahead, two-run single off Stumpf (3-2).
Brandon Alger worked around a one-out walk in the top of the ninth to secure San Antonio's first sweep since July of last season. Luis De La Cruz (1-2) earned the win for the Missions after allowing one run on one hit in one inning of work. The victory extended San Antonio's win streak to a season-high five games.
Following an off day, San Antonio (25-30) will open up a four-game series against the Frisco RoughRiders (23-33) Tuesday at Dr Pepper Ballpark in Frisco, TX. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 PM. Elliot Morris (1-4, 4.67) will get the ball for the Missions, while the 'Riders will counter with fellow righty Jose Leclerc (2-2, 5.05).
Notes: The last time the Missions scored nine or more runs in an inning was on April 14, 2013 at Springfield, when they erupted for 11 in the fifth inning.
