Corpus Christi Hooks News Release
CORPUS CHRISTI - San Antonio overcame a 5-0 first-inning deficit to beat Corpus Christi 8-5 Monday at Whataburger Field before 7,581.
The Missions completed second-half Texas League play at 31-39. The Hooks dropped to 30-40. The clubs' final overall regular-season marks are 70-70 and 61-79, respectively.
Home runs to left on consecutive pitches by Nick Moresi and Brandon Barnes highlighted a five-run Hooks first. Corpus Christi moved up 2-0 on Mark Ori's RBI single and a Jhon Florentino sacrifice fly.
That was it for Missions starter Steve Garrison, who threw just 14 pitches.
San Antonio answered immediately with two scores during a four-hit surge off Fernando Abad in which Cedric Hunter and Eric Sogard had run-scoring singles.
The Missions pecked away in the middle innings to take a 6-5 lead through six.
They pulled to within a run at 5-4 in the fourth, Abad's last frame. Reliever Stephen Faris spanked an RBI double inside the bag at third and later sprinted home on a wild pitch.
They tied it up the next inning with Charlie Weatherby (1-5) pitching on Craig Cooper's double to right after Logan Forsythe hit a one-out single.
In the sixth, San Antonio parlayed Sawyer Carroll's lead-off walk into the go-ahead run when Sogard lifted a sacrifice fly to center. The Missions' seventh and eighth runs crossed in the eighth on a throwing error by pitcher Danny Meszaros and Sogard's ground out.
Cooper extended his hitting streak to 14 games and Hunter had three hits to lead all players. Matt Buschmann (2-1), the second of four San Antonio relievers, was credited with the win. He struck out two in three innings. Evan Scribner notched his 21st save.
The Missions play host to Midland in the first two games of the Texas League South Division series Wednesday and Thursday.
