Missions Come up Short in Series-Opening Loss to RockHounds

San Antonio Missions News Release

San Antonio's bats went quiet during a 4-1 loss to Midland in the opener of a four-game series Thursday night at Wolff Stadium.

Bryce Morrow got the ball for the Missions Thursday in his second start at the Double-A level. The Grand Rapids, MI native was once again impressive, allowing just one run on two hits and one walk, while striking out five over five innings. Midland's lone run off Morrow came courtesy of a Jefry Marte sacrifice fly in the second inning. In his two starts since arriving from High-A Lake Elsinore, Morrow (0-1) has pitched to a 1.50 ERA and has a K:BB ratio of 13:2 over 12 innings.

In the top of the seventh, the RockHounds pushed their lead to 2-0 against reliever Jeff Ibarra when Max Muncy doubled, moved to third on an Anthony Aliotti sacrifice bunt and then came in on a Marte single up the middle.

San Antonio, which had just three hits through seven innings, finally got to Midland starter Shawn Haviland in the eighth when Hunter Renfroe led off the frame with his first Double-A homer. After Haviland (4-4) got Austin Hedges to line out to shortstop Dusty Coleman, Midland manager Aaron Nieckula summoned Tucker Healy out of the bullpen.

The right-hander ran into immediate trouble when he allowed consecutive singles to Yeison Asencio and Cody Overbeck. However, Healy recovered quickly, fanning both Brian Bixler and Adam Buschini to escape further trouble.

Unfortunately, for the Wolff crowd of 4,794, Coleman ended any hopes for a San Antonio comeback when he drilled a two-run, ground-rule double off reliever Adys Portillo in the top of the 9th.

Seth Frankoff worked around a one-out single by Jason Hagerty in the ninth to earn his 14th save of the season.

San Antonio (38-35, 2-1) and Midland (40-32, 2-0) resume their series Friday on Used Car Night presented by Security Service Federal Credit Union. Twelve lucky fans (18 & older to enter) Friday night will drive away with a "new to you" used car. Winners will be announced throughout the game. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 PM. Josh Geer (2-7, 4.00) will get the ball for the Missions, while the RockHounds counter with fellow righty Nate Long (7-2, 3.49).
