Arkansas Travelers News Release

LITTLE ROCK - The Arkansas Travelers unloaded three home runs in the first three innings on Thursday to overpower the Springfield Cardinals for a 9-1 victory at Dickey-Stephens Park. Kaleb Cowart (5) hit the go-ahead dinger (5) and scored four runs to help the Travs break a three-game losing streak in the opener of a four-game series. Michael Roth (6-4) continued his mastery with one run allowed in seven innings for the win.

Jimmy Swift (2) and Jett Bandy (6) also hit home runs off Springfield's Kyle Hald (6-2), who surrendered a season-high six runs in the loss. In three previous outings against the Travs, Hald had allowed just two runs in 18.1 innings.

Maikol Gonzalez led off the first inning single, which Cowart followed with a drive over the left field fence for a 2-0 lead.

Swift powered a solo shot into the left-field basket in the second inning. Bandy hit a three-run homer, his second in as many games, in the third for a 6-0 lead.

Brian Hernandez collected three singles and two RBI. Hernandez and Alex Yarbrough hit RBI singles against Logan Billbrough in the sixth inning. Cowart tripled and scored on Hernandez's third single in the ninth inning to cap the scoring.

Roth, now with a 2.46 ERA on the season, allowed just one of the first ten Cardinals hitters to reach base, that on a walk. Springfield loaded the bases in the fifth inning with no outs on a leadoff walk and two singles. Roth kept the damage to just one run, on a fielder's choice hit by Matt Williams. Roth then picked off Williams and caught him stealing second base before striking out Mike O'Neill for the third out.

Roth set down eight of the last nine batters he faced before Danny Reynolds and David Carpenter each pitched one shutout inning. In his last nine starts, Roth is 6-1 with a 1.44 ERA.

Time of game was 2:45 and the paid attendance was 4,639.
