Missed Chances Lead to Chukars' Loss

IDAHO FALLS, ID -- The Chukars were denied their first three game winning streak in 2014. Early runs for the Rockies enough for Grand Junction to hold on with a 6-3 win.

Eric Skoglund (0-1) made his Melaleuca Field debut for Idaho Falls on the mound, but the Royals third round draft pick struggled in the second inning. Renaldo Jenkins tagged Skoglund for a home run to left field to get the Rockies (8-5) on the board. The blast unnerved Skoglund, as he would walk the next batter, then allow two straight hits. The left hander was removed, but not before he was charged with three runs in just 1.1 innings.

The Chukars (5-8) fell behind 5-0, but trimmed two off the lead in the third. A groundout by Luis Valenzuela scored Desmond Henry, and that was followed up by a run scoring single by Ryan O'Hearn. The next inning, Idaho Falls squandered an opportunity to get even closer, with a Jecksson Flores flyout to center with the bases loaded.

The biggest missed opportunity came in the sixth. Alexis Rivera homered to begin the bottom half of the frame, to pull Idaho Falls with a 5-3 score. Both Mike Hill and Pedro Gonzalez singled off Mark Magliaro, with no one out. But, a foul bunt-strikeout by Desmond Henry couldn't advance the runners. The following batter, Flores, grounded into a double play.

Idaho Falls concludes the four game series against Grand Junction tomorrow. Alec Mills is slated to pitch for the Chukars, against James Lomangino.
