Mohegan Wolves News Release
Uncasville, CT (June 7th, 2002)- The Mohegan Wolves (3-7) again fell just short of victory tonight as the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Pioneers (3-7) nipped the Wolves 49-40 before 4,548 devoted Wolves fans. The loss, Mohegan's second straight, and sixth in the last seven games, drops the Wolves into last place in the tough Northeast Division.
The Wolves came out early again with 14 first quarter points. Ben LaBelle had a 1-yard touchdown run while Melvin Phillips grabbed a 14-yard touchdown reception from Cable Davis giving Mohegan a 14-7 first quarter lead.
The second quarter saw Wolves kicker Shawn Maclean connect on two field goals, from 16 yards and 32 yards respectively. Wolves' offensive specialist Brandon Burnside ran his second kickoff of the season back for a touchdown, this time for a return of 57 yards. However that was not enough, as the Pioneers would lead 28-27 at the half.
Wilkes-Barre/Scranton added two more touchdowns in the third while Mohegan tallied a Ben LaBelle 14 yard reception keeping the game close at 42-33.
Both the Pioneers and Wolves would score a final touchdown in the fourth quarter but a late goal line fumble would once again seal the Wolves fate giving the Pioneers the victory.
QB Bryan Snyder led Wilkes-Barre/Scranton. Snyder passed for 230 yards and 6 touchdowns en route to being named Game Most Valuable Player. WR/DB Aman Abye was named Ironman of the Game. Abye had 6 receptions for 48 yards and a touchdown to go with a game high 6 ½ tackles, and an interception. Pioneer lineman Tim Argiriadi was named ADT Defensive Player of the game. He recorded the games only sack.
Cable Davis passed for 249 yards and 3 touchdowns on the evening. Andy Macaione, who saw more action due to the injury of Brent Burnside, caught 14 passes for 110 yards to lead all receivers. Brandon Burnside added 5 receptions for 73 yards and a touchdown to go with his kickoff return for a TD. Heron O'Neal led the Wolves defenders with 5 tackles and an interception.
These two teams will meet again next weekend in Wilkes-Barre. Game time is set for 7:30 next Saturday night at First Union Arena in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania.
