Carolina Rhinos News Release

GREENVILLE, SC – The arenafootball2’s Carolina Rhinos lost 45-14 at home to the Roanoke Steam Saturday in the first of two meetings in three weeks between the teams. It was the franchise-record fourth loss in a row for the Rhinos who fell to 2-7. Roanoke snapped a three-game losing streak and improved to 5-5 with the win. The teams will play again on Saturday June 22nd in Roanoke.

RoanokeÂ’s Sean Peterson replaced starting quarterback Mike Volarvich and completed 13 passes for 155 yards and three touchdowns. Peterson also rushed for a score and was named the gameÂ’s Built Ford Tough Player and Most Valuable Player. The SteamÂ’s Glenn Young was named the Ironman and ADT Defensive Player of the Game.

The teams traded scores to make it 7-7 through one quarter. The Rhinos answered a Roanoke touchdown with the first of two scoring runs by quarterback Ramone Robinson. Robinson led the Rhinos offense with 51 rushing yards and completing 11 passes for 96 yards. However, he was intercepted twice.

Roanoke put the game out of reach with 18 unanswered second-quarter points including a safety by Glenn Young 4:32 into the frame. Steam kicker Josh Jones also hit a 25-yard, second-quarter field goal as part of a seven-point effort. RobinsonÂ’s second touchdown run with :31 left in the half interrupted RoanokeÂ’s scoring streak, but the Steam answered just :12 later to make it 31-14 at halftime.

For the second week in a row, the Rhinos were held scoreless through two quarters. After failing to put points on the board in the second and third frame last Friday in a 31-28 road loss to the Louisville Fire, they were held scoreless in the second half Saturday. Roanoke notched touchdowns in both the third and fourth quarters to push the final score to 45-14.

RoanokeÂ’s James Everage rushed for team-leading 13 yards and one touchdown and also caught two passes for 44 yards and two touchdowns. The SteamÂ’s Tacoma Fontaine and Karlos Odum also caught touchdown passes while Kenan McWhorter led the team with 78 receiving yards.

Roanoke will visit the Tennessee Valley Vipers while the Rhinos will host the first-year Cape Fear Wildcats next Saturday June the 15th.
