Carolina Rhinos News Release
GREENVILLE, SC â Today, Carl Scheer, Chairman and CEO of ScheerSports, Inc., announced that the Carolina Rhinos of the arenafootball2 would cease operations effective immediately.
"It became apparent that in order to stabilize the minor league sports under the management of ScheerSports in Greenville and Charlotte, we would need to concentrate our energies and resources on our two hockey teams â the Greenville Grrrowl and the Charlotte Checkers - and the management of the Greenville Groove," stated Scheer. "This was a difficult business decision both personally and professionally, because I have the highest regard for the af2 and the many friends and associates that were made in the three years of operation."
ScheerSports, Inc. is the principal owner of the East Coast Hockey League's Greenville Grrrowl and part owner and manager of team operations of the Charlotte Checkers (as of May 21, 2002), and was instrumental in every phase of development and construction of the BI-LO Center in downtown Greenville, South Carolina. On May 14, 2002, ScheerSports entered into a contract with the NBA to manage the business operations of the Greenville Groove of the NBDL.
The Carolina Rhinos played for three seasons at the BI-LO Center beginning in 2000. The team made the playoffs in two of three seasons, and reached the league semi-finals in 2001. Tickets that were purchased for the 2003 season, including those made by club seat holders, will be reimbursed or credited to future events at the BI-LO Center.
