Fort Myers Mighty Mussels News Release

DUNEDIN, F.L. (September 2, 2008) - Coming into Tuesday's night Florida State League playoff game at Knology Park, the Fort Myers Miracle had been owned by the Dunedin Blue Jays all season long. That ownership was proudly put to a halt on Tuesday as the Miracle picked up a 2-1 win over the Blue Jays, take a 1-0 series lead, and have a chance to clinch the west division crown and move to the FSL Championship Series with a win on Wednesday night.

The two decisive runs for the Miracle came right off the bat as Juan Portes got the visitors off to a fast and furious start with a base hit to right. Two hitters later, center fielder Rene Tosoni, just a week removed from the disabled list, came up a two-run homer to right, putting the Miracle up 2-0.

The contest would stay that way until the bottom of the Jays ninth. Matt Liuzza put life back into the Jays leading off with a solo-shot to right off of Miracle closer Anthony Slama, getting Dunedin on the board and getting the Knology Park crowd back into the game. After an Anthony Hatch single to left, Slama retired Marcos Cabral on strikes for the first out of the inning. Chris Emanuele followed with a single to left, putting the tying run at second and winning run at first. Slama then got the double play ball out of Luis Sanchez to end the game.

Cole Devries pitched 6.2 outstanding innings, blanking Dunedin with a five-hit performance in the win. Carlos Gutierrez hurled 1.1 innings with a hit and two strikeouts before Slama registered the save in the ninth.

With the Miracle up 1-0 in the series, game two of the best-of-three first round series with the Jays now shifts to Hammond Stadium where the Miracle can clinch a trip to the FSL Championship for the first time since 1995. RHP Alex Burnett (8-6, 3.76) will square off against Dunedin's RHP Ray Gonzalez (12-4, 3.14). Free tickets for Wednesday night's playoff game can be picked up at Lee and Collier County Racetrac Gas Stations. First pitch is at 7:05 p.m. and can be heard live on WMYR AM-1410 and WCNZ AM-1660 beginning at 6:50 p.m.
