Miracle, Spring and Lee County Bid to Strikeout Bullying

FORT MYERS, Fla. (May 6, 2015) - This year, the Fort Myers Miracle teamed up with Sprint and the Lee County school system to Strikeout Bullying. Over 10,000 pledges were distributed to elementary and middle schools during the year and students that have signed the pledge can pick up a complimentary ticket to the Miracle game on Saturday, May 9 at 6:05 p.m.

Students that sign the pledge can participate in a pregame parade at Hammond Stadium. The Miracle battle the Jupiter Hammerheads and gates to the ballpark open at 5 p.m. Kid's in attendance will receive a prize from Zoomer's Family Amusement Park.

According to BullyingStatistics.org, 77 percent of all students report being verbally bullied which can include spreading rumors, yelling obscenities or other derogatory terms. Out of the 77 percent, 14 percent have a severe or bad reaction to abuse. These students often experience poor self-esteem, depression and anxiety.

"Everyone has a right to be who he or she is without being bullied or made fun of," said April Thompson, Prevention Specials for the Lee County School District. "With our recent partnership with the Miracle we are excited to offer a fantastic family event that raises awareness and addresses this very important topic of bullying in our schools and in the community."

National advocate for the Be B.R.A.V.E. anti-bullying program Rylie Spicker will be at Hammond Stadium to throw out a ceremonial first pitch. B.R.A.V.E. stands for Building Respect and Values for Everyone. Ryle is currently Miss Junior High School America and visits elementary and middle school students to team them about identifying, preventing and stopping bullying.

The Fort Myers Miracle are the Class A Advanced minor league baseball affiliate of the Minnesota Twins Major League Baseball club. Since moving to Fort Myers in 1992, the Miracle have qualified for the Florida State League Playoffs eight times and won the Florida State League Championship in 2014.
