Charlotte Stone Crabs News Release

JUPITER, FL - The Stone Crabs looked like their old selves again, playing a one-run game down to the wire at Roger Dean Stadium on Wednesday night. After a couple of letdowns in the first two games of the series, Buddy Borden provided a lift in his first start of the season. Willy Adames continued to show that he's starting to get hot, and a run-scoring single off Esmerling De La Rosa in the seventh proved to be the game-winner as the Stone Crabs return home with a 17-10 record.

Borden, the Las Vegas native who came to the Rays from the Pirates organization in the Sean Rodriguez trade, looked really comfortable in his seventh appearance of the season. With a 3-1 record out of the bullpen, the righthander only allowed a Christian Yelich double and a walk to Chris Hoo in his first three innings of work. He closed out a perfect third inning with his first two strikeouts, using his curveball to fool both Yelich and Austin Dean.

With Hammerheads starter Alex Burgos done after three innings, the Stone Crabs got a leadoff single from Adames and a Jake Bauers double to open the fourth. A walk to Marty Gantt loaded the bases, and another walk by Maxx Tissenbaum broke the scoreless tie. Armando Araiza sent a soft liner to J.T. Riddle, but the shortstop leapt up too soon and the ball glanced off his mitt for an RBI single and a 2-0 Stone Crabs lead. Miguel Del Pozo then erased the poor start by striking out Braxton Lee and Juniel Querecuto to end the threat.

Jupiter got a run right back in the bottom of the inning courtesy of a leadoff single from Brian Anderson and a walk to Felix Munoz. Avery Romero then lined a single into left center to cut the Hammerheads deficit in half at 2-1. Borden got the next two outs to retire the side and used a flawless fifth inning to end his night with a one run lead.

In the sixth, Steve Ascher's task of protecting the lead disappeared once Yelich and Anderson singled to put runners at the corners with nobody out. Munoz hit into a double play up the middle that was turned by Adames at short, but Yelich scored the tying run to make it a 2-2 ballgame. Ascher (2-0) then surrendered a two out single to Romero, but retired seven of the next eight Hammerheads hitters in his last two innings.

Facing De La Rosa in the seventh, Braxton Lee's great at bat resulted in an infield single to lead things off. He soon swiped second for his fourth steal of the year, and Adames made sure he got one he liked. With two outs, he cranked a 2-2 fastball into center for his 11th run batted in and a 3-2 lead. Brad Schreiber later entered for the ninth and was dominant, earning his seventh save after striking out Hoo with a beautiful breaking ball to give the `Crabs the final game of the series.

The Stone Crabs return home to Port Charlotte for a three-game series with the St. Lucie Mets starting Thursday, May 7 at 6:30 PM. It's Thirsty Thursday at Charlotte Sports Park, where fans can enjoy 12 oz. fountain sodas and domestic draft beers for $1 as well as $2 domestic bottles until the end of the 5th inning!
