Yankees Tally 16 Hits in 9-3 Pounding of Blue Jays

TAMPA - Every batter in the lineup had a hit for the Tampa Yankees (14-12), who scored nine runs on 16 hits in a 9-3 win over the Dunedin Blue Jays (12-14) on Tuesday night at George M. Steinbrenner Field.

SS Tyler Wade (3-for-5) led Tampa with four runs batted in.

The Yankees jumped out to an early lead in the first. Abiatal Avelino singled and stole second before scoring on a base hit by Wade. Wes Wilson and Avelino hit consecutive singles with one out in the third. Both scored as Wade doubled down the left field line. A wild pitch sent Wade to third, who crossed the plate on a sacrifice fly by Miguel Andujar.

Gabe Encinas started for Tampa for the first time this season. The right-hander did not allow a run or a hit over two and two-third innings, walking three while striking out one.

Tampa took a 5-0 lead in the fourth. Danny Oh singled, stole second and took third as Wilson singled into left. Avelino then picked up his first RBI as a Tampa Yankee by reaching on a fielder's choice.

The Yankees tagged RHP Murphy Smith (0-2) for five runs on eight hits in his four innings of work. Smith walked one and struck out one in the loss for Dunedin.

Jared Burton was added to the Tampa Yankee roster prior to the game and pitched two innings of relief. Burton walked three and allowed one hit while striking out two in a scoreless performance. The New York Yankees signed Burton during Spring Training. The right-hander is coming back from an oblique injury.

The T-Yanks scored runs in their final three times batting. Wilson reached on a fielding error in the sixth and later scored as RHP Alberto Tirado threw a wild pick-off attempt into the Yankee dugout. Ericson Leonora collected a two-out RBI single in the seventh. Wade and Andujar drove in two more runs in the eighth.

Connor Kendrick (2-1) earned the win for Tampa after pitching four innings of relief. The southpaw was originally scheduled to start on Tuesday. Instead, he made his first relief appearance of the year. Kendrick allowed three runs (two earned) on seven hits, walking one while striking out four.

Mitch Nay drove in the first Dunedin run with a sacrifice fly in the sixth. The Blue Jays scored two more runs in the ninth with an RBI groundout by Dawel Lugo and a run-scoring error by Andujar at third base.

Avelino (3-for-4, 2B, HBP) reached base all five times, scoring three runs. Matt Snyder (3-for-4, BB) increased his batting average to .353. Wilson went 2-for-4 with two runs scored.

The series wraps up on Wednesday night at 7. RHP Rookie Davis (1-2, 3.16 ERA) is scheduled to start for Tampa. RHP Jeremy Gabryszwski (1-0, 3.60 ERA) gets the nod for the Blue Jays.
