PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. (May 6, 2015) - The Palm Beach Cardinals used four pitchers to shut out the St. Lucie Mets 3-0 on Wednesday at Tradition Field.
Cardinals starter Trey Nielsen blanked the Mets over five innings while allowing three hits and striking out four. Due to a nearly two hour rain delay in the top of the sixth, Nielsen was lifted after the fifth inning.
Relievers Steven Sabatino, Josh Lucas and Kyle Barraclough tossed the last four innings. The Mets put runners at first and third with no outs in the eight, but Lucas struck out Champ Stuart and got Jeff McNeil to line into a double play to preserve the shutout.
Mets starter Marcos Molina gave up just one hit through the first four innings and retired 10 batters in a row until Jose Gonzalez double to start the fifth. Rowan Wick followed with a single and Juan Herrera hit a sac fly to right to bring home Gonzalez for the first run of the game.
Molina allowed a leadoff double in the sixth and then the rain came, causing a delay that would knock Molina out.
When play resumed, Kyle Regnault took over and balked Mason Katz to third. Katz scored on Bruce Caldwell's single.
Palm Beach scored its final run in the seventh on an RBI double by Katz.
The Mets offense collected seven hits. Michael Conforto went 3 for 4. Unfortunately for the Mets, the one at bat Conforto didn't get a hit on came in the third when runners were at the corner with two outs. He grounded out to first.
Molina took the loss. He pitched five innings and gave up two runs, both earned.
The Cardinals broke out for 11 hits after having just one through the first four innings. Katz led the way with three.
The Mets fell under .500 (13-14) for just the second time this season. They had entered Wednesday's game with a 7-1 record as a .500 team.
The Mets hit the road on Thursday to visit the FSL South-leading Charlotte Stone Crabs. First pitch from Charlotte Sports Park is 6:30 p.m. The game can be heard on www.stluciemets.com with the Voice of the Mets, Adam MacDonald.
