
Miracle split pair with Tigers

LAKELAND, FL (August 14, 2005) - The Fort Myers Miracle finally figured out how to beat the Lakeland Tigers at Joker Marchant Stadium, unfortunately, the couldn't complete the sweep of the double header winning game one 3-1 and losing the night cap 4-2.
In game one the Miracle were able to defeat Nate Bumbstead, who entered the game 11-3 on the season. The Tigers got on the board first in the second inning. With two outs Kody Kirkland was hit by an Adam Harben fastball. Garth McKinney then slugged a 420 foot triple off the wall in dead center that scored Kirkland and gave the Tigers a 1-0 lead. Harben went five innings allowing one run on three hits while walking four and striking out three.
The Miracle tied it in the fifth when Scott Whitrock hit a 2-0 fastball over the left field wall, his 13th of the season and tied the game at one.
In the seventh the Miracle got two runs to take the lead. With one out Ron Perodin lined a single into left. Matt Tolbert followed with a walk to put runners at first and second. The two runners moved up on a wild pitch and Angelo Fermin singled to right to drive home Perodin and send Tolbert to third. Fermin then advanced to second on a wild pitch. Tiger catcher Russ Cleveland's throw to second went into center field which allowed Tolbert to score.
In the bottom of the seventh Chris Schutt retired the first two batters on strikeouts, but walked the next two. Jan Granado came out of the bullpen to face Derek Nicholson who hit a grounder in between first and second. Fermin made a diving play and threw out Nicholson at first to end the game.
Schutt earned the victory going 1.2 shutout innings allowing two hits while walking two and striking out two. Granado picked up his second save of the season. Jose Leger went 0-3 and his hitting streak ended at 12 games.
With a chance to get within a half game of first place in game two the Miracle jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first. With two outs Trent Oeltjen reached on an infield single. Brock Peterson followed with a two run homer to left-center, his 10th of the season. That would be all the offense the Miracle could muster, managing just three hits the rest of the way.
The Tigers got on the board in the second on a solo homer off the bat of Eric Rodland, his fifth of the season.
They sent eight men to the plate in the fourth and scored three runs. Brent Clevlen doubled to right to lead off the inning. He scored on an RBI single from Derek Nicholson. With one out Juan Gonzalez walked to put runners at first and second. Rodland singled to right-center that drove home Nicholson and moved Gonzalez to third. Gonzalez then scored on a balk.
Miracle starter Scott Tyler went just 3.1 innings allowing four runs on five hits while walking three and striking out one. The bullpen kept the Miracle in the game with Julio DePaula going 1.2 scoreless innings allowing one hit while walking two and striking out one. Josh Gray pitched a perfect sixth, striking out two.
The Miracle have Monday off and will take on the Clearwater Threshers Tuesday night at Hammond Stadium. The Miracle send RHP Jay Rainville (3-1, 2
