Fort Myers Mighty Mussels News Release

DAYTONA, FL - From one year to the next the constant has always been at Jackie Robinson Ballpark, carry a lead late, find a way to lose it and the 2006 Fort Myers Miracle found out what that was all about as they squandered a lead in the final three innings and lost 7-5 to the Daytona Cubs on Saturday night.

With the Miracle leading 4-2 in the seventh inning, the Cubs started their rally with two outs in the seventh inning. The best hitter in the FSL Sam Fuld started it with an infield single to short. Jemel Spearman reached on an error by shortstop Trevor Plouffe. Aron Weston followed with an RBI single and Jake Fox singled home the tying run.

The Miracle, who fell to 32-23 and into a tie for first, actually answered back in the top of the eighth inning. With one out Justin Arneson walked and stole second. Alexi Casilla then lined a single to center to give the Miracle a 5-4 lead. After an intentional walk to Garrett Guzman, Kyle Geiger ended the inning by grounding into a double play.

With the Miracle closer on the hill in the eighth, J.P. Martinez, all looked comfortable when he got Danny Gonzalez to start off the inning with a ground out. Alan Rick then hit a routine grounder to second, but it hit the lip of the grass and caromed away from Casilla for a base hit. With two outs Andy Lane singled to right and then Fuld hit an RBI single to left to tie the game at five. Spearman followed with a two run single to center and that was the end for the Miracle.

The Miracle jumped out to a 4-1 lead and it started in the second. Brock Peterson doubled to left center and with two outs scored on a single by Luke Hughes.

After the Cubs tied it in the third, the Miracle took the lead in the fourth. Peterson and Matt Tolbert started the inning off with walks. Plouffe followed with an infield single and Hughes' double play ball scored Peterson to make it 2-1.

The Miracle scored two in the fifth when Arneson led off with a walk. He moved to second on a ground out and scored on an RBI single from Geiger. Peterson followed with an RBI double to make it 4-1, but that was the beginning of the end for the Miracle.

The same two teams meet Sunday evening at 6:05 p.m. at Jackie Robinson Ballpark. The Miracle send RHP Colby Miller (1-1, 2.70) to the hill against Cubs RHP Justin Berg (3-4, 4.34).
