Dodgers Capture Win Over Threshers

(Clearwater, FL) - Cory Dunlap's 2-out, 2-RBI single in the 7th inning lifted the Vero Beach Dodgers to a 6-5 victory over the Clearwater Threshers Saturday night at Brighthouse Networks Field. Blake Johnson earned the win to even his record at 3-3 and FSL All Star Brian Akin saved his fifth game in as many chances. The series ends Sunday at 1:05 PM. It was a back-and-forth game and the Dodgers won for just the fourth time this year when trailing after six innings. Clearwater had taken a 4-3 advantage in the sixth when Brian Sellier and Tuffy Gosewisch hit back-to-back doubles off Johnson. Vero answered in the top of the seventh and even overcame some controversy. After a one-out single from Gabriel Gutierrez, Xavier Paul launched a drive to center field. The ball wedged between the top of the green wall and the black batter's eye behind it. Initially ruled a home run, it was later changed to a ground-rule double and instead of a one-run lead, the Dodgers still trailed 4-3. However, after a pitching change following a lengthy argument from the Dodgers, Adolfo Gonzalez singled to right to tie the score. Blake DeWitt was intentionally walked and Dunlap followed with his decisive single to score two and put the Dodgers ahead 6-4. Newly crowned closer Brian Akin made it interesting in the bottom of the ninth. He issued leadoff back-to-back walks to Brian Burgamy and Peeter Ramos. He came back to strike out Mike Costanzo, but Branden Florence singled to load the bases. Bryan Hansen's sacrifice fly make it 6-5, then Akin shut the door by striking out Brad Harman to end the game. Six different Dodgers tallied multi-hit games. Adolfo Gonzalez stroked his second home run of the year just inside the foul pole down the left field line. On the hill, Brent Leach dealt 1 2/3 scoreless frames during which he allowed only one baserunner that he eventually picked off.
