Fort Myers Mighty Mussels News Release
VERO BEACH, FL (July 27, 2006) - There are two things the Fort Myers Miracle are learning real fast about the Vero Beach Dodgers. First, their record of 23 games under .500 doesn't mean they are a pushover and second don't leave pitches up in the zone or they will be hit out of the ballpark. For the second straight night the long ball was the difference as Cory Dunlap hit a two run homer in the bottom of the ninth for the Dodgers as the Miracle lost 4-2 at Holman Stadium on Thursday night.
All six runs were scored via the long ball and a night after the teams combined for five homers, they added four more on Thursday. The biggest blow came in the bottom of the ninth. Miracle reliever Tim Lahey gave up a lead off single to Drew Locke. Cory Dunlap stepped to the plate and the big 6'3, 205 pound lefty was asked to sacrifice. He missed his first attempt. The bunt sign was taken off for the next pitch and it was a good thing for Dunlap who crushed the pitch over the right-center field wall for the game winning homer, his 13th of the season and second in two nights. Lahey took his first loss of the season, falling to 5-1.
The Miracle hit two solo homers on the evening. Steve Tolleson gave the Miracle a 1-0 lead in the second with a high fly over the left field wall, his second of the season. Brock Peterson hit his 12th dinger of the year, a solo shot to left-center, to make it 2-0. The home run tied his 2005 total with the Miracle.. That was the only damage the Miracle could do against righty Jonathan Meloan who was amazing. He went 5.2 innings allowing two runs on five hits while striking out a career high 12. The Miracle went down a season tying high 15 times.
Dave Gassner, making his second Major League rehab start with the Miracle, was impressive. On a 60 pitch count he went four innings. He allowed just a lead off bunt single to Jamie Hoffman and didn't allow another hit until the fourth. He gave up a two out single to Dunlap and then a two run homer to dead center off of Cole Bruce, his 10th of the season. Gassner went 4.0 innings allowing two runs on three hits while walking one and striking out one. Miracle reliever J.P. Martinez tossed 3.0 no-hit innings of relief allowing just two walks and striking out two,
The same two teams meet Friday night at 7:00 p.m. at Holman Stadium. The Miracle send RHP Kyle Waldrop (2-0, 2.25) to the hill against Dodger RHP Cory Wade (0-1, 6.43).
