Vero Beach Devil Rays News Release

(Vero Beach, FL) - Cory Dunlap lined a game-winning 2-run home run to right field in the bottom of the ninth to lift the Vero Beach Dodgers to a 4-2 victory over the Ft. Myers Miracle Thursday night at Holman Stadium. Brent Leach picked up the win with two scoreless relief innings. The series continues Friday night with a 7:00 PM game at Holman Stadium when the first 500 fans through the gate will receive a 2006 VB Dodgers Team Card Set.

With Drew Locke at first base and no outs in the ninth, Dunlap missed a bunt attempt at the first pitch from Tim Lahey. On the next offering, Dunlap cracked a long liner that cleared the fence in right-center for the win. It was his 13th home run of the season and his second of the series.

He had also scored earlier in the game. Dunlap singled with one out in the fourth against starter Dave Gassner. Cole Bruce followed it up with a home run to center that tied the score at two. It was the 10th home run of the year for Bruce.

Ft. Myers had taken an early lead. Vero Beach starter John Meloan allowed a solo home run to Steve Tolleson in the second and another to Brock Peterson in the fourth. Those were the only mistakes the righthander made, however, as he then racked up 12 strikeouts in only 5 2/3 innings. Meloan did not walk anyone and allowed just four hits. Zach Hammes pitched the final out of the sixth and recorded the first two outs of the eighth. Korey Feiner then walked and Jeremy Pickrel doubled to put runners at second and third. However, Hammes rebounded to retire Brandon Roberts and keep it tied.

Leach (3-2) then entered in the eighth and walked his first batter. However he again used his remarkable pickoff move to wipe out the baserunner. Leach picked off two runners on Tuesday. The Miracle managed only one other walk against Leach, who has not allowed a run in his last three outings.

The win marked the Dodgers third in a row, which matches a season-high. They try to make it four straight Friday night with Cory Wade (0-1) making his second Florida State League start against Kyle Aselton (5-3).
