Fort Myers Mighty Mussels News Release
TAMPA, FL (August 10, 2005) - There were no Major League pitchers on the hill Wednesday night at Legends Field, but Fort Myers Miracle starter Jay Rainville and Tampa Yankee starter Tyler Clippard pitched like they had Major League stuff as the Miracle won 2-1 in 10 innings.
Rainville nearly had his second complete game in as many starts. He entered the ninth with a 1-0 lead. Yosvany Almario led off by reaching on an error by third baseman Jose Leger. He stole second and moved to third on a ground out. Rainville was removed for Julio DePaula. With the infield in DePaula got Josh Hollingsworth to ground out to second. Erold Andrus, who doubled home the winning runs the night before, promptly doubled off the left-center field wall to tie the game at one. One batter later DePaula got out of the inning. Rainville went 8.1 innings allowing one unearned run on six hits while walking one and striking out three.
In the 10th the Miracle loaded the bases. With one out Angelo Fermin singled to right-center. Allan De San Miguel singled to right to put runners at first and second. After Ron Perodin walked to load the bases, Matt Tolbert popped out to third. Trent Oeltjen then walked to force in a run and give the Miracle the lead. DePaula retired the side in order in the 10th to pick up his fourth win of the season.
Clippard, who was 9-7 with the eighth best ERA in the Flordia State League, 3.11, going into the game, wanted to exact revenge against the Miracle. He was 0-3 with a 6.19 ERA in three games. He allowed five of his 11 home runs this season to the Miracle. Clippard was firing on all cylinders. He allowed just three hits through the first six innings. It was one pitch in the seventh that hurt him. Kyle Geiger led off the seventh and the first pitch he saw he drilled over the left field wall, for his sixth homer of the season. It was the only mistake Clippard made, but it was costly. He went seven innings allowing the one run on four hits while striking out a career tying 12. From the fifth until the seventh, he got eight straight outs on strikeouts.
The same two teams meet Thursday night at Legends Field at 7:00 p.m. The Miracle send LHP Justin Jones (4-2, 3.94) to the hill against Yankee RHP Jon Skaggs (0-0, 9.82).
