Fort Myers Mighty Mussels News Release
FORT MYERS, Fla.- The Fort Myers Miracle (9-10) used a four-run seventh inning to defeat the Bradenton Marauders (10-9) in a back and forth battle on Tuesday night. The 7-3 win for Fort Myers brings them one game back of first place in the FSL South division.
RHP Dereck Rodriguez fought hard in an attempt to earn his first win of the season, but he departed in a 3-3 tie after 6.2 strong innings.
The scoring began in the second inning with Zander Wiel's second home run of the season, a dead center bullet off starter RHP Mitch Keller. The hit was the only one Keller allowed until the sixth inning as he dazzled with high-90's fastballs.
Bradenton countered with a pair of runs in the top of the fifth inning against Rodriguez. Logan Hill tied the game with a solo home run, his first of two, to lead things off. After a Casey Hughston triple, a one-out error by Chris Paul at third base gave the Marauders a 2-1 lead.
In the sixth, the Miracle finally got to Keller. A fortunate infield single and error on Keller brought Nelson Molina to second base. Two batter later, Casey Scoggins doubled down the left field line to tie the game. A single and walk loaded the bases when the first pitch Keller threw to Max Murphy hit him. The painful RBI brought in Scoggins to give the Miracle the lead.
The first batter against Rodriguez in the top of the seventh was Logan Hill who promptly tied the game with his second solo shot. After a one-out Alfredo Reyes double, Rodriguez got Mitchell Tolman to fly out to center and reliever RHP Nick Anderson (W, 1-0) ended the threat inducing a flyout of Cole Tucker.
Fort Myers regained the lead and added their insurance with a four-spot in the seventh. The frame began with a break when Trey Vavra popped a lazy fly ball up to first, but a backpedaling Will Craig dropped the ball to put a runner on. After a wild pitch, Molina singled up the middle to score Vavra and give Fort Myers a 4-3 lead. The Miracle then used singles from Alex Perez and Scoggins along with a Chris Paul sac fly to go up 7-3.
Paul also extended his hit streak to 11 and on-base streak to 18 games. Anderson took care of the final two innings to earn the win.
Game two of this three game set begins at 6:35 PM ET on Wednesday night on a Women's WINsday. RHP Cody Stashak battles LHP Taylor Hearn.
