TAMPA, Fla. - The offense woke up for the Tampa Yankees (8-12), but the Clearwater Threshers (14-6) prevailed in a 7-5 final on Wednesday night at George M. Steinbrenner Field.
The sides combined for 28 hits, with the Yankees tying their season-high with 12.
Clearwater jumped ahead early as Mark Laird led off the game with a single to center and later scored on a groundout by Wilson Garcia. Damek Tomscha added to the lead in the second with a two-run single.
Domingo Acevedo (L, 0-3) worked out of further trouble by stranding a pair in the fourth and leaving the bases loaded in the fifth. The right-hander allowed three earned runs on 10 hits in five innings, striking out six without surrendering a walk and throwing 62 of 83 pitches for strikes.
Tampa got on the board in the third when Jorge Mateo legged out a bunt single and later scored on a groundout by Chris Gittens.
Zack Littell made his first relief appearance of the season for the T-Yanks in the sixth and the Threshers greeted the righty with back-to-back singles by Zach Coppola and Emmanuel Marrero. Both later scored on an RBI single by Herlis Rodriguez
The Yankees chipped a way at a 5-1 deficit with runs in the next two innings. Tito Polo led off the sixth with a ground-rule double and later scored on a sacrifice fly by Trey Amburgey . Mateo lined a one-out single in the seventh and scored after getting a jump-start off first base when Didi Gregorius floated a single down the right field line.
Laird led off the eighth with a single off RHP Cody Carroll and scored on a two-run home run by Rodriguez, giving Clearwater a 7-3 lead.
The homer by Rodriguez proved to be the deciding hit as the Yankees scored twice in the bottom of the inning. Sharif Othman lined a two-out single into left and scored when Austin Aune crushed a two-run home run over the wall in left-center field.
Mateo kept the inning alive with a single into left, bringing Gregorius up as the potential tying run. Clearwater turned to closer Jeff Singer, who walked Gregorius before getting Tito Polo to hit an inning-ending groundout to second.
Singer (SV, 5) threw a 1-2-3 ninth to earn his league-leading fifth save.
Jose Taveras (W, 3-0) made a quality start for Clearwater, holding Tampa to two earned runs on seven hits in six innings. The right-hander walked one, struck out five and threw 51 of 73 pitches for strikes.
Gregorius (2-for-4, BB, RBI, SB) reached base three times in his fifth game of his rehab assignment with the T-Yanks, including his first stolen base. The 27-year-old played all nine innings at shortstop. Gregorius is now batting .444 (8-for-18, HR, 2B, BB, 2RBI, R).
Mateo (3-for-5, 2R) recorded his second three-hit game of the season. Polo (2-for-5, R) tallied two hits in his return from the disabled list. RHP Dillon McNamara tossed a perfect ninth (1.0IP, 2K).
