Fort Myers Mighty Mussels News Release
FORT MYERS, Fla. (June 14, 2012) - The Bradenton Marauders avoided a sweep by cruising past the Fort Myers Miracle 6-0 on Thursday at Hammond Stadium. The win snapped a five-game losing streak for the Marauders and ended a four-game winning streak by the Miracle as both teams head into the All-Star break.
Gerrit Cole, the No. 1 pick out of UCLA in 2011, shut down the Miracle offense. Cole struck out seven and gave up just three singles in five innings on his way to improving to 5-1.
Meanwhile, Miracle starter Pat Dean was unable to keep the Marauders in check. Justin Howard and Andy Vazquez hit back-to-back triples in the second to put the Marauders up 1-0.
A Lance Ray error at first base with two outs in the fourth allowed Alex Dickerson to score for a 3-0 Bradenton lead.
Dean was unable to get through sixth innings and was pulled after allowing an RBI double by Daniel Grovatt with one out in the fifth. The run made it 5-0. Dean (4-4) ended up giving up six runs on seven hits in 5 1/3 innings.
Daniel Ortiz had a solid night at the place for the Miracle, going 3 for 4 with a double. He collected three of Fort Myers' four hits.
Daniel McCutchen pitched two innings of one-hit relief for the Marauders in a Major League rehab start.
Attendance on Thursday's game was 2,221.
The Miracle head to the All-Star break with a 27-37 record. They are tied with the Charlotte Stone Crabs for fourth place the Florida State League South Division. The Marauders improved to 27-40 but still sit in last place in the South.
The Miracle will take three days off for the All-Star break and return to action on the road at Jupiter on Monday. Join the "Voice of the Miracle" Brice Zimmerman for the State Farm Pregame Show on Monday at 6:15 p.m.
