
Miracle and Flying Tigers Split Doubleheader

LAKELAND, Fla. - The Fort Myers Miracle split a doubleheader with the Lakeland Flying Tigers on Tuesday morning at Joker Marchant Stadium. The Miracle won game one, 5-3, but fell in game two, 3-2.
In game one, the Miracle staked starter Tom Stuifbergen to a 4-0 lead by the bottom of the fourth inning. In the first, Levi Michael extending his hitting streak to nine games with a lead off double into right field. The next hitter, Aderling Mejia singled into center field to plate Michael. Mejia pushed his hitting streak to seven games.
Fort Myers took a 3-0 advantage in the third inning with back-to-back home runs from Miguel Sano and Kennys Vargas off Lakeland starter Wilsen Palacios. Sano launched a 1-0 pitch into the grass berm beyond the left field wall for his league-leading 12th homer of the season. Vargas followed with an opposite field smash to left for his eighth long ball of 2013. The consecutive homers marked the first time this season that the Miracle have gone back-to-back.
After adding a run in the top of the fourth, the Flying Tigers picked up three runs off Stuifbergen in the fourth with five hits. Dixon Machado, Jeff McVaney, Aaron Westlake and Michael Hernandez started off with consecutive hits. Westlake, Hernandez and Jason King picked up RBIs.
Miracle reliever Matt Hauser pitched two scoreless innings in the fifth and sixth and Corey Williams wrapped up the final three outs for the his eighth save. Williams induced a double play after allowing a lead off single.
Sano finished 2-for-3 and and Jairo Rodriguez was 2-for-4 with a run batted in.
Flying Tiger starter Wilsen Palacios (2-4) was the losing pitcher allowing five runs, four earned, on eight hits.
In game two, Miracle starter Kyle Davies gave up three runs in the first inning including a two-run homer to Jeff McVaney. Davies (0-2) went three innings and allowed three runs on six hits while stranding six.
Fort Myers took the lead on Miguel Sano's solo home run in the first inning. The deep fly over the left field fence was Sano's second of the day and 13th of the season. The Miracle also got a solo blast off the bat of Angel Morales in the second.
The homers accounted for the only offense off Flying Tigers starter Kyle Ryan. Pitching 6.2 innings, Ryan (4-4) gave up jus two runs on four hits with five strikeouts. Melvin Mercedes retired the final hitter of the game for his fourth save.
Michael extended his hitting streak to 10 games with a third inning double, but was picked off second base.
The Miracle (32-11) play the Flying Tigers (16-28) in the third game of the series on Wednesday night at 6:30 p.m. Fans can listen to the action on www.miraclebaseball.com.
