JUPITER, Fla. - The Daytona Cubs scored five in the top of the 10th inning to defeat the Hammerheads 7-2 Tuesday night at Roger Dean Stadium.
Entering the 10th inning tied 2-2, the Cubs strung together three straight singles, plating the go- ahead run. After a fielder's choice scored the inning's second run, top prospects Javier Baez and Jorge Soler each singled, the latter of which scored two more runs.
RHP James Nygren then replaced RHP Ronald Barnes, inducing a run-scoring double-play and a ground out to short to end the nightmare inning. Barnes was charged with five runs-all earned-on five hits. He did not record an out. Barnes had allowed just four earned runs in his previous 11 appearances combined.
Austin Barnes tied the game at one with a solo home run in the sixth. Daytona re-gained the lead in the top of the seventh on a Dustin Geiger ground out that scored Baez. Jupiter answered again in the bottom half, scoring Ryan Goetz on an Isaac Galloway single to center field.
The bullpens pitched scoreless eighth and ninth innings before the Cubs hung a five-spot in the 10th, effectively ending the Hammerheads' nine-game winning streak.
RHP Anthony DeSclafani struck out six in as many innings, allowing just one run on three hits and a walk. The outing raised his season ERA to 1.32, still second-best in the Florida State League.
RHP P.J. Francescon tossed six strong innings of his own, yielding just one run on five hits and two walks. LHP Frank Del Valle pitched a scoreless ninth and 10th inning to record the win.
Chad Noble, Chadd Krist, Baez and Soler had two hits each for the Cubs-all of them singles.
They pounded out 13 hits as a team, including three from third baseman Ben Carhart.
With the four-game series knotted-up at one game a piece, Jupiter will look to start a new streak Wednesday night at Roger Dean Stadium. RHP Jake Esch (0-1, 0.00) will oppose RHP Yeiper Castillo (1-0, 2.33). First pitch is scheduled for 6:35 p.m.
