Minnesota United FC vs. Portland Timbers Preview

May 17, 2024 - Major League Soccer (MLS)
Minnesota United FC News Release

GOLDEN VALLEY, Minn. - Minnesota United this weekend plays its second game of the week, this time hosting the Portland Timbers on Saturday night. On Wednesday, MNUFC played to a 2-2 draw at home against one of the better teams in the Western Conference so far in 2024, the LA Galaxy. Bongokuhle Hlongwane scored the opening goal for the Loons before Kervin Arriaga netted the equalizer late into the match.

Ahead of Saturday night's contest, Minnesota United holds an unbeaten streak at home against the Timbers dating back to 2017 - MNUFC's inaugural season in MLS. That unbeaten run at home includes five wins and one draw between both TCF Bank Stadium and Allianz Field regular-season matches. The Loons are currently riding a four-game unbeaten streak in regular-season action, with three wins and a draw across the past four matches.

The Portland Timbers enter Saturday's fixture capturing a 4-2 come-from-behind victory at home against the San Jose Earthquakes. Prior to that win on Wednesday, the Timbers side has lost three consecutive games in a row. It has been an up-and-down season for Portland, with the club having gone through two three-game losing streaks and a three-game streak of only draws in between. New head coach Phil Neville hopes to start a run of wins as the Oregon side faces an upward-trending Minnesota squad at Allianz Field.
