Minnesota United FC News Release

GOLDEN VALLEY, Minn. - Minnesota United, following a 3-1 victory on the road over Detroit City FC in the Third Round of the 2023 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup, was drawn into its Round of 32 fixture against the Philadelphia Union. Tuesday night's contest at Allianz Field is set to be the only scheduled match between the two sides, as they will not face in MLS regular-season action in 2023. Last year, Minnesota and Philadelphia played to a 1-1 regular-season draw at Subaru Park, where Loons' midfielder Robin Lod scored the only goal for the visiting squad. Minnesota holds an even-keeled 1-1-1 (W-L-D) record at home against the Union, all-time, where both sides have scored an equal six goals apiece. MNUFC looks to break a winless streak across all competitions and to advance to the Round of 16 for a second straight year, should they defeat their Eastern Conference counterparts on Tuesday night.

ADRIAN HEATH ON WHAT TO EXPECT IN THE PHILADELPHIA UNION SQUAD...

"They play like Philly. They're up and at you, very aggressive in the way they play. I've got enormous respect for Jim [Curtin]. I'm probably one of the closest to him in all the coaches in the league; we text pretty regular. They've done great over the last two or three years. They've got a set system, the way they play. They've got two big, strong frontrunners, they've got [Daniel] Gazdag, they've got goal scorers. They're really good on set pieces, and no matter what team you put out, it'll be competitive."

CLINT IRWIN ON DIFFERENCES BETWEEN CUP COMPETITION VERSUS LEAGUE PLAY...

"It's one where the consequences are higher, right? You're in a game that's a knockout game. The stakes are raised where your tournament's going to come to an end when goals are given up potentially. So, you just have to be a little bit more aware. Also, you have to understand that it's an even longer game. It's 120 minutes, potentially, into penalties and a lot can happen. Just staying level, staying in the game and being ready for it when it comes."
