December 19, 2013 - North American Soccer League (NASL)
Minnesota United FC News Release
MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. (December 19, 2013) - Minnesota United FC and the North American Soccer League (NASL) unveiled the schedule for the 2014 Spring Season today. United opens on the road for the first two weeks, featuring an away test against NASL newcomer, Ottawa Fury, on April 19. United hosts FC Edmonton in its home opener at National Sports Center Stadium Saturday, April 26.
"It's always exciting to get the schedule," said United president Nick Rogers. "While we would love to open the Spring at NSC stadium in Blaine, we played well on the road last season and hope to carry that momentum into the first two tests in the Spring before opening at home in front of our amazing fans against FC Edmonton."
The shortened nine-week spring campaign will run from April 12 through June 8, to allow for a mid-season break to align with the FIFA World Cup. The winner of the first half of the NASL season will qualify for and earn the right to host the 2014 NASL Soccer Bowl.
The spring season will include ten teams, including two newcomers, Indy Eleven and the Ottawa Fury. Minnesota United FC will be joined by the Atlanta Silverbacks, Carolina RailHawks, FC Edmonton, Fort Lauderdale Strikers, Indy Eleven, New York Cosmos, Ottawa Fury, San Antonio Scorpions and Tampa Bay Rowdies in the Spring. The decision by Virginia Cavalry FC to defer its inaugural season until 2015 means the ten clubs participating in 2014 must each play a nine-game season, with an unavoidable uneven balance between each team's total number of home and away games.
Minnesota United FC will play all four of its Spring home matches at National Sports Center Stadium in Blaine, Minn.
