FC Edmonton News Release
EDMONTON, AB (December 19, 2013) - FC Edmonton and the North American Soccer League (NASL) announce today the release of the Spring Schedule for the 2014 NASL season.
With the addition of Ottawa Fury FC and the Indy Eleven to the league, the NASL will play a nine-game schedule in the spring of 2014. FCE's first home game will take place on April 19, 2014 against last season's Soccer Bowl Champions the New York Cosmos.
"It's always a special time when you get to play the Cosmos," said FCE head coach Colin Miller. "We are looking forward to a big home crowd. Last season, fans were treated to two great matches and we're hoping for another great set of matches this season."
The Eddies following home games will be against the Fort Lauderdale Strikers, Atlanta Silverbacks and Carolina RailHawks to wrap up the Spring Season. The majority of FC Edmonton's home games in the Spring Season will take place on Saturday's with the exception of the last game, which will take place on a Sunday, times are yet to be determined. Please note that all match dates and times are all subject to change.
"After listening to many of our fans and soccer enthusiasts, we will now be playing three of our first four home matches in 2014 on Saturdays," said FC Edmonton general manager Rod Proudfoot. "The Club is working very diligently on improving the match experience, and we fully expect to sell out a number of games this season."
FC Edmonton is one of five teams that will have four games at home in the spring to pave the way to the Soccer Bowl for 2014. The shortened nine-week spring campaign will run through June 8, to allow for a mid-season break to align with the FIFA World Cup. The winner of the first half of the NASL season will qualify for and earn the right to host NASL Soccer Bowl 2014.
"We're playing an unbalanced schedule. It's as simple as that," said Proudfoot. "There are factors that contributed to the decision for some teams to have four home games from stadium conflicts to weather conditions. The fact of the matter is, some teams have to play four home games, and we head into our schedule with the intent of a successful season."
The remaining games in the Spring Season will take place on the road and will feature games against Minnesota, Indianapolis, San Antonio, Ottawa and Carolina. The season opener for the Eddies will take place on April 12, 2014 in St. Petersburg against the Tampa Bay Rowdies.
