Miners Take Two from Jackals
July 25, 2019 - Canadian American League (Can-Am)
New Jersey Jackals News Release
Sussex County defeated New Jersey 8-2 in the first game of a double header at Yogi Berra Stadium. The game was a continuation of a game that was postponed due to rain on July 17th.
The Miners had taken a 3-0 lead in the first before the game was postponed so the Jackals found themselves in a hole to start the day and could not climb out of it.
Sussex County added to their lead in the third, seventh and ninth innings, using a few poor defensive plays and walks to set the table for base hits. Cito Culver joined Trey Hair and Jose Brizuela in the RBI column on Wednesday. The Miners tallied 12 hits and scored eight runs.
The Jackals could not chip into the lead until the eight inning where Chase Smartt and Isaac Wenrich hit back to back RBI singles.
Justin Brantley took the loss after giving up three runs in the first on July 17th. David Palladino picked up the win for Sussex County.
Jeffrey Rosa took the ball for the Jackals in the second game of the double header that was a shortened, seven inning match. Rosa walked three Miners batters in the first inning and eventually surrendered a two out, two-run single to Jose Brizuela to give the Sussex a quick 2-0 lead.
The Jackals scratched across one run in the bottom half after Miners starter Tom Burns walked the bases loaded, Alfredo Marte skied a fly ball to center deep enough to score Nelson Ward from third base to make the score 2-1.
The two starters traded zeroes until the bottom of the 4th, when Burns balked with Richard Stock on third base to tie the game at two.
The Miners eventually tacked on three runs in the 6th inning and two in the 7th to secure the lead highlighted by a Kalian Sams RBI triple. Sussex went on to win the game 7-3.
The Jackals will kick off a five game road trip tomorrow when they travel to Sussex County to take on the Miners in a doubleheader on Thursday before heading up to Canada to battle with Trois-Rivieres over the weekend.
