Southern Illinois Miners News Release
Marion, IL - The Southern Illinois Miners had three separate leads on Saturday night against the Washington Wild Things, but saw the visitors come back each time, as they were not able to hold a 4-3 ninth-inning lead before allowing five runs in the tenth in a 9-4 loss at Rent One Park.
The Miners grabbed the first two runs of the game in the second inning on a solo homer by Joe Dudek to center field and a two-out RBI hit later in the frame by John Holland to make it 2-0. Southern Illinois starter Austin Dubsky held the Wild Things off the board until the fourth inning, when an RBI single by Hector Roa made it 2-1. Nolan Earley answered in the bottom of the inning with a solo home run of his own to push the lead out to 3-1, but Washington would score single runs in the fifth and sixth to tie it up at 3-3.
In the seventh inning, Holland led off with an infield hit and was sacrificed to second base by Joe Duncan. After a walk by Kurt Wertz, Jr. Washington made a pitching change, and Chance Shepard put the Miners in front 4-3 with an RBI single off the shortstop's glove into left field. The bullpen held the lead in the eighth, but in the ninth, with one out, a walk set off a string of three straight base runners against John Werner, with Roman Collins' hit tying the game at 4-4. With the go-ahead run at third base and one out, Werner struck out two straight to keep the game tied.
After the Miners could not score in the ninth, the game went to extra innings, and the Wild Things would bat around in the frame, scoring five runs on six hits to take the lead for the first time in the game at 9-4, with RBI hits in the Frame for Brett Marr, James Harris and Carter McEachern as well as a sacrifice fly by Collins. The Miners could not get closer in the bottom half in suffering their fifth consecutive loss.
Southern Illinois will look to avoid a sweep on Sunday at 5:05 p.m., with Aaron Rozek starting against the Wild Things' Frank Trimarco.
