
Miners Fall Short at Bosse Field

Evansville, IN - The Southern Illinois Miners lost the lead twice against the Evansville Otters as the Otters defeated the Miners 7-5. Miners starter David Harden (6-4) went seven innings but allowed seven runs. He gave up ten hits and struck out four batters. Harden has now lost three straight decisions.
The Miners took an early lead off Otters starter Wynn Pelzer as Chad Maddox provided the early run with a base hit and RBI to score Darian Sandford to give the Miners a 1-0 lead. The Miners added another run in the top of the second inning on a RBI ground out by Matt Soderlund to score Alvaro Ramirez to give the Miners a 2-0 lead. In the top of the fourth inning with a 2-0 lead, Cannon Lester put a ball in play which allowed Will Block to score from second base to give the Miners a 3-0 lead. Block had been on second base, advancing on a wild pitch by Otters starter Wynn Pelzer.
The Miners held the 3-0 lead until the bottom of the third inning when the Otters tied the game by scoring three runs off Miners starter David Harden. Otters short stop Luis Parache hit a double and a RBI. First baseman Nick Schwaner hit a base hit and a RBI. Finally, right fielder DeAngelo Mack hit into a fielders choice to bring in the third run of the inning.
With the game tied up at three, in the top of the fifth inning, Miners short stop Jake Kaase hit a go ahead home run off Pelzer to give the Miners a 4-3 lead. That home run gave Kaase his 34th RBI on the season and his ninth home run. The Miners added another run in the top of the seventh inning off Otters reliever Dan Marcacci when Kaase hit a double and a RBI to score Darian Sandford to give the Miners a 5-3 lead.
The Otters scored four runs off Miners starter David Harden in the bottom of the seventh inning to take a 7-5 lead. Luis Parache brought in a run on a fielders choice. Nick Schwaner added a run on a sacrifice fly. Taylor Black added the big hit of the inning, a two RBI single.
Miners reliever David Whigham pitched a scoreless eighth inning. Miners out fielder Darian Sandford stole two bases to give him 41 on the season, which leads the Frontier League. Eric Massingham earned his 15th save for the Evansville Otters as the Otters defeated the Miners 7-5. With the loss the Miners fall to 36-25 on the season. The Miners will send LHP Brian Fowler to the mound to even the series for Southern Illinois. First pitch from Bosse Field is at 6:35 pm.
