MILWAUKEE (March 1, 2005) – The Milwaukee Wave secured back-to-back wins last weekend against the Kansas City Comets behind a strong effort from forward Greg Howes. Howes recorded eight goals and four assists in the two Wave victories, moving him into first place on the MISL scoring list with 42 points thus far. In Friday night's 8-3 victory he recorded a personal career best five goals and three assists for eight points. The 27-year-old followed that with a hat trick and an assist in Saturday night's 6-1 win. Over the course of the two games, Howes had a hand in 12 of Milwaukee's 14 goals.

This week the Wave begins preparations for a school day game in St. Louis on Thursday, (3/3) at 11:05 a.m. This will be the sixth meeting between the two teams, with Milwaukee holding a 3-2 advantage in the season series. The teams last met on Saturday, February 19 with Milwaukee taking a 7-3 victory in St. Louis. The team will then host the Philadelphia KiXX on Sunday, March 6 at the U.S. Cellular Arena (1:05 p.m.). Sunday is also Russian Nesting Doll Day featuring 2003-04 MISL MVP Greg Howes, the Wave's all-time leader in blocks Pat White and the 1997 Herman Trophy winner Johnny Torres.

Wave vs. St. Louis Steamers

Milwaukee and St. Louis will meet for the fifth time this season on Thursday morning. The Wave holds a slight advantage at 3-2 in the season series, following a 7-3 win in St. Louis the last time the two teams met. Greg Howes collected two goals and Giuliano Oliviero added a goal and two assists to secure the win. The Steamers recorded a 5-4 victory at the U.S. Cellular Arena on February 4 the last time the teams met in Milwaukee. On December 3, the Wave recorded a 6-4 win and on December 11, a 3-2 victory, before falling on January 7, 6-5 in double overtime. Following Thursday's contest, the two teams will meet two more times in the regular season; 3/20 in Milwaukee and 4/16 at St. Louis.

Sunday's match at "The Cell," U.S. Cellular Arena, will be the fourth of six meetings this season between the Wave and KiXX. Milwaukee currently holds a slight advantage in the season series, having won two-of three matches. The two teams last met in the KiXX 10th Annual School Day Game on Wednesday, February 16, with the Wave taking a 6-2 victory. Matt Schmidt had two goals and an assist and Greg Howes added a goal and two assists on the day. Nick Vorberg recorded the win between the posts, stopping 13-of-15 shots faced. The teams met in Milwaukee on January 14 with the Wave recording a 7-5 victory in which 12 different players in total recorded goals between the two teams. The KiXX dominated the first meeting of the 2004-05 campaign, taking a 6-3 decision on December 18 in Philadelphia.

Last Time Out: 2-25 @ Kansas City - Greg Howes collected five goals and three assists to lead the Milwaukee Wave past the Kansas City Comets 8-3 Friday night. Howes played a part in all eight Wave goals on the night and records a personal best in goals scored in one game with five. Marcelo Fontana added two goals and an assist for three points. Wave keeper Nick Vorberg recorded the win between the posts, stopping 13-of-16 shots faced. The Kansas City Comets got on the board first following a shoot out goal by Jamar Beasley at 8:13 of the first quarter. The two teams traded goals until the Wave took a 3-2 lead in the second quarter and went on to collect five unanswered goals to secure the win.

2-26 vs. Kansas City – The Wave held on to the top spot in the MISL and extended its current winning streak to six games by defeating the Comets, 6-1. Greg Howes recorded his second hat trick in the series, and Nick Vorberg registered his sixth straight win between the posts, bettering his season record to 15-5. Milwaukee opened up the scoring in the second period at 8:08 as Greg Howes took a pass from Ricardinho for the shot past Kansas City's goalkeeper Sanaldo. Then at 12:59, with only seconds remaining in the power-play, Michael King took a pass from Chris Morman to tally another goal for the Wave. King was positioned close to the goal for a quick shot into the back of the net. Milwaukee earned its third goal after Matt Schmidt found Semir Mesanovic at 3:07 in the third quarter. Soon after, Greg Howes collected a hat trick on the evening, scoring at 5:50 and 7:37, assisted by Ricardinho and Morman, respectively. Chris Morman then took the assist from Howes to take the 6-0 lead at 12:32 for Milwaukee's fourth goal of the third period.

Wave Sweeps Weekly Honors: The Major Indoor Soccer League announced that behind three strong efforts from goalkeeper Nick Vorberg, defender Chris Morman and forward Greg Howes, the Milwaukee Wave swept the MISL weekly honors for the week ending February 27. Vorberg was solid in goal, allowing just four goals in the two wins. In his last six appearances, Vorberg has posted an impressive 6-0 record with a 2.32 goals against average and a .841 save percentage. Morman earns his third straight weekly honor after recording four blocks, a goal and two assists in the wins. Howes put together his finest night on Friday, collecting five goals and three assists for eight points. He followed that with a hat trick and an assist on Saturday night.



Alebic Joins Wave for Second Stint: On February 24, Milwaukee Wave Vice President of Soccer Operations and Head Coach Keith Tozer announced the signing of a two-year contract with defender Sinisa Alebic. The Wave acquired Sinisa's rights on February 10 from the St. Louis Steamers. His contract will cover the remainder of this season through the 2005-06 campaign. Alebic begins his second stint in Milwaukee, following three prior seasons with the Wave (00-01, 01-02, 02-03). While with the Wave, the Split, Croatia native appeared in 88 games, tallying 39 points and 92 blocks, and also contributed to the 2000-01 MISL Championship Title. The 35-year-old enjoyed his finest season while with the Wave in 2001-02, posting career best totals in games played (43), goals (9), assists (7) and blocks (46). Alebic spent last year's campaign with the Dallas Sidekicks, where he was an MISL All-Star, after he was selected in the 2003 MISL Expansion Draft.

Wave Defense Leads MISL: Milwaukee currently boasts the top defensive attack behind MISL leading goalkeeper Nick Vorberg with a 3.56 goals-against average. Vorberg has recorded 15 wins in 20 appearances between the posts for the Wave. The team also leads the league in goals against average, allowing opponents to convert just 4.2 goals per game on average. Milwaukee is also the most effective in the league on the man down team, killing an opponents power play 71% of the time.

Wave Selects Five in College Draft: Milwaukee Wave Vice President of Soccer Operations and Head Coach Keith Tozer announced on Tuesday, February 22, the selection of five college players in the 2005 Major Indoor Soccer League College Draft. The Milwaukee Wave's selections consist of three Wisconsin natives, including territorial round (eighth overall) selection Brett Wiesner from the University of Washington. In the first round the Wave selected defender Trent Furtsch from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. Forward Chris Lee, from Lenexa, Kansas, attends Marquette University and was selected as the second round, 26th overall draft pick. Rogerio Oliveira, a midfielder from Bryan, Texas, was Milwaukee's third round, 35th overall pick. Born in Brazil, he attends the University of Alabama-Birmingham (UAB). Rounding out Milwaukee's draft picks was Nick Van Sicklen from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, in the fourth round, 44th overall.
