
Chicago Soccer Legend Karl-Heinz Granitza Added to Storm Front Office

Chicago (Tuesday, March 1, 2005) â The Chicago Storm announced today that Chicago soccer legend Karl-Heinz Granitza has joined the front office as a General Sales Manager.
"We are proud to add Karl-Heinz to our staff," said Storm Chairman and CEO Viktor Jakovljevic. "His passion and love of the game is a valuable addition to the Storm. He is the most recognizable soccer player in Chicago history and he has been a loyal supporter of ours. We feel that this move will help us improve our community and sales involvement."
A 2003 inductee of the National Soccer Hall of Fame, Granitza is best known for leading the Chicago Sting to two NASL championships. In 1981, the Sting defeated the rival New York Cosmos to capture their first Soccer Bowl title. The team added a 1984 Soccer Bowl trophy after dispatching the Toronto Blizzard in a two-game series. The Lünen, Germany native scored 128 goals and 101 assists for 357 points in 199 games for the Sting from 1978 through 1984 in the NASL. In the MISL with the Sting, Granitza totaled 168 goals and 161 assists for 329 points in 174 games from 1982 until 1985. He served as a player/head coach of the Chicago Power of the NPSL during the 1987-88 seasons
"I am very happy to be a part of the Chicago Storm," said Granitza. "We have a lot of work to do to help spread the Storm throughout the Chicagoland area. I am very privileged to do my part in helping the Storm front office with sales and in the community."
Prior to joining the Sting, Granitza played for Hertha Berlin of the German Bundesliga. With Hertha Berlin, he scored 34 goals in 73 games from 1976-79. In Germany, he also competed for Rochling Volkingen, DJK Gutersloh, TSG Eintracht Dortmund and VfB 08 Lünen.
Formed on June 3, 2004, the Chicago Storm became the seventh team in the MISL, joining the two-time defending champion Baltimore Blast, Cleveland Force, Kansas City Comets, Milwaukee Wave, Philadelphia Kixx and St. Louis Steamers. The California Cougars will join the league for the start of the 2005-06 season to bring the leagues total to eight teams. Storm home games are played at the UIC Pavilion in Chicago.
