Milwaukee Wave Storms Chicago in Overtime, 4-3

MILWAUKEE (Sunday, February 20, 2005) – The Milwaukee Wave defeated the Chicago Storm 4-3 in overtime in front of 4,305 at "The Cell", U.S. Cellular Arena on Sunday afternoon. Giuliano Oliviero blasted home the game-winner to the far corner of the net, off the assist from Chris Morman. For the third time in eight games, the two teams needed overtime to determine a winner, with Milwaukee winning two-of-three. The Wave extended its current winning streak to four games, while ending Chicago's streak at six. Greg Howes had two goals and Oliviero added an assist and a goal for two points each. MISL leading goalkeeper Nick Vorberg had a strong day in goal, stopping 13-of-16 shots faced between the posts.

The Milwaukee Wave and Chicago Storm battled to a scoreless opening period in the eighth and final regular sesason meeting between the two teams. Each team got off a number of shots, but neither was able to convert.

The Milwaukee Wave got on the board at 2:56 of the second quarter with a power-play goal by Greg Howes. Chicago's Tijani Ayegbusi was sent to the box for tripping and Ricardinho was able to find Howes off the restart to capitalize on the man advantage. The Storm tied things up with a power-play goal of its own by Lazo Alavanja (13:40) off the assist from Leo Pernia.

The Storm took the lead at 12:05 of the third period when Andy Guastaferro found Byron Alvarez (12:04) on the low post and Alvarez was able to blast the ball past Wave keeper Nick Vorberg. The goal would prove to be the only score of the third period, with the Storm taking a 2-1 lead heading into the final period.

Milwaukee tied the score at two apiece as Joe Hammes (4:36) was able to send the ball into the back of the net past Danny Waltman. The Storm took a 3-2 lead when Guastaferro and Alvarez teamed up for the second time on the day. This time Alvarez fed Guastaferro who was able to convert for the score at 12:54. Milwaukee evened the score at 3-3 one minute later as Howes collected his second goal of the game, with the assist to Giuliano Oliviero.

The teams headed into overtime for the third time this season and the seventh overall time for the Wave in 2004-05. Chicago's Gus Karterouliotis was sent to the box for boarding in the extra session and Oliviero was able to blast home the game-winner to the far corner of the top of the net past Waltman. Chicago and Milwaukee end the regular season series between the two clubs tied at 4-4.

After playing three road games, the Wave returns home to "The Cell", U.S. Cellular Arena, three Sundays in a row in March: the 6th, 13th and 20th for 1 p.m. games. March 6 versus the Philadelphia KiXX is Russian Nesting Doll Giveaway Day. Three Wave players (Greg Howes, Pat White and Johnny Torres) are depicted as the popular Russian souvenir, the stacking doll. The first 2,500 fans will receive this item of Wave memorabilia.
